This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You might be experiencing issues where original translations are lost and replaced with auto-translated text. You're unsure if the text has been overwritten and are considering rolling back the database to restore previous versions of translations.
Solution:
Firstly, it's important to understand that WPML does not overwrite existing translations without manual changes or actions on the site. If you see the same strings after restoring a backup, this confirms that no changes have occurred in the translations. All translations are stored within the database, not in local files. Therefore, rolling back the database should reflect the translations as they were at the time of the backup, provided no other changes have been made.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems irrelevant due to it being outdated or not applicable to your specific case, we recommend opening a new support ticket. We also highly advise checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Background of the issue:
I'm being told by some in our other offices that their translations have been lost and replaced with AI translated text. This page for example hidden link however if I roll back the database from over a year ago I see the same text.

Symptoms:
Original translations lost and replaced with auto translation.

Questions:
Is there any way to tell if text has been overwritten?
Is there any way to restore back to a previous version of a translation?

Hi there.

No, there is not way to see if anything changed in the translation.

But if you are seeing the same strings if you restore a backup, then nothing has changed, that's a confirmation.

WPML will not overwrite existing translations without any manual changes or actions on the site.

I hope that you will find this information helpful.

Thanks
Just to be clear I'm only rolling back the database and not the files, is it possible the strings are in files stored locally and not the database?

Hi there and welcome back!

The translations are all saved inside the database not in files.
