Background of the issue:
I am trying to save a page in German, but when I do so, the page is replaced with the content of the English version of the page, which is our site's base language. This issue only happens on this version of the site. On a local version of the site, with a previous version of the site database but the same code, the issue does not occur. Link to a page where the issue can be seen: hidden link

Symptoms:
The page reverts to the English version when I try to save it in German.

Questions:
Why does the page revert to the English version when saving in German?
Why does this issue only occur on the current site version and not on the local version?

Thanks for contacting us.

This usually happens when the translated page is configured as "duplicate" as explained here https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/displaying-untranslated-content-on-pages-in-secondary-languages/#duplicating-content . However, it's strange that you mentioned this doesn't happen locally.

I will need to closely examine your website. Therefore, I will require temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to a test site where the problem has been replicated, if possible. This will enable me to provide better assistance and determine if any configurations need to be modified.

Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.

Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.

✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.

Thanks for your reply. I've edited the German language here hidden link and resaved it. Then, I check the frontend and the contents are still in German hidden link and not reverted to English, like what you encountered. Could you check?

Just to update more, some users on our site are able to save pages in German without the translation reverting to English.

It seems that users set to be local translators from English to German are able to save translations without this error, though up until very recently this was not the case.

Hmm, it looks like the issue might be solely confined to my user account. Is this possible? And if so, how can we diagnose what's causing this?

Thanks for your reply. No, I don't think it's related to user accounts. Can you still replicate the issue on the staging site?

April 24, 2025 at 5:39 pm #16965759

I've actually been unable to recreate it on the staging site, though the database should be identical to the production site on which I'm having the error.

In addition, it seems a majority of the local translators we have on our site have been erased this morning, and I am unable to add most of them back manually. Do you know why this is occurring, or if it could be related?

In the meantime, I'll attempt to replicate the error again on staging

Thanks for your reply. For the missing translators, are you referring to the production site or your staging site? I don't think it's related, as I've not done any troubleshooting actions yet on your Website.

Hey Kor, I've been unable to replicate this issue again on staging for some reason. Is it possible for me to share with you the login details of our production site, where the issue is still occurring?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, please share the login to the production site. Also, please make sure to have a backup just incase something breaks when I troubleshoot it.

Thanks for your patience.

When I added some text to the German page here hidden link , it broke. Could you please share FTP access here so that I could enable debug mode to check the error logs?

Or you can check for yourself here by enabling debugging mode https://wpml.org/documentation/support/debugging-wpml/

Danielle Cranmer

Just a few questions on this first, as this is our production site, and I wanna be careful with breaking it:
1. Do you mean WordPress debug mode? If at all possible I'd like to avoid enabling that, as error messages will show on every page. If you need debug info, I can send you text from the logs.
2. If not, and you're requesting WPML debug logs, can I upload that here?

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I need to check the debug log from your WordPress installation. You can read more about it here https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/debug/debug-wordpress/ . Once you've the debug log, please upload it on pastebin.com and share the link with me.

Here's the debug log: https://pastebin.com/4xRiPGaf

Because of the traffic for our site, I had to cut it down to fit pastebin's upload limit, though I tried to isolate the time you made changes and make sure that was in there.

Let me know if you'd prefer I link you the entire error log, which goes back to April 28th
