Background of the issue:
I am using WPML for a multilingual WordPress site and have encountered an issue with the language code for Japanese. Initially, the language code was set to 'ja', and I have already created hundreds of posts and pages in this language. However, my website has a long-established convention to use 'jp' for Japanese content (e.g., jp.abcde.net), and I need the entire website to reflect this. Unfortunately, I understand from the WPML settings that language codes cannot be changed once added, and only hreflang and Default Locale can be adjusted.
Symptoms:
The language code for Japanese is set to 'ja', but I need it to be 'jp' throughout the website.
Questions:
May I know how to change 'ja' to 'jp' throughout the website?
Dear Sirs,
I've taken reference to this documentation. I wanna clarify.
Step 1:
In Japanese (ja), I should Bulk Duplicate using Translation management.
However I doubt will this approach causing "Disconnection" of content between my Default Content (English?)
I've several hundreds of Post & page, before I do this step, I would like to know if the new JP duplicated content will work the same as JA which maybe at the same stages of the original ja content (on synchronisation with default language)
That is correct, if I understand correctly your default language is "English" and you have translated from it to Japanese (JA), you will now bulk duplicate from Japanese (JA) to the new custom language Japanese (JP), if yes, the connection will indeed remain.
Before proceeding as you do have many posts and pages, I recommend doing the following:
- Always have a recent and working backup of the site before making any changes
- You can test this procedure with a few pages to start with to verify that it is working as expected from your side as well before proceeding with a larger batch.
