    • WPML works fine with WordPress 3.3, but I’m not sure about themes generated by Artisteer. We’ll be happy to work with Artisteer and check this together. Anyway, if you buy WPML and have any sort of trouble, we’ll refund your order immediately.

  1. I would like to use WPML plugin in a WordPress blog that functions as a back-end CMS. I have my own frontend UI which will get blog posts from WordPress using RSS feeds. With WPML installed, am I able to obtain RSS feeds containing just those posts available in a selected language? If so, can you point me to documentation that explains how this is done?

  2. is there a possibility to change the translation manually with the blog version or is there only automatic conversion? any experience with Catalyst theme from Themeforest?

    thanks
    andre

  3. Hi Amir,

I guess my blog stayed under “« Older Comments”.:)
can you please answer my question, thanks.

I am bit confused which package do i choose, Multilingual Blog package vs CMS?
I will make my blogs Eng/French.Instead of installing 2 wordpress I will use your package to make the site bilingual (Eng/French or English/Armenian).

the post might not be the same translation but will have 10 English posts and 10 french posts.

    Thank you

  4. Hello, i have a couple of questions:

    1. Does the plugin includes Localization of the website? That would be very cool, so that users dont need to change the language manually, even though they could.

    2. How do I add it to a custom made theme?

    Thank you!

  5. I’m thinking of buying this plugin and i have 1 question.
I saw that there is no problem with translation of page and post but, I wanna buy some random theme. And in index.php i wanna add some random div with content. The title of div will be”title with 1st language” and content “content with 1st language” . Is it possible to I use wpml and organize that when i switch language to second one i have title “title with 2nd language” and content “content with 2nd language”. Does wpml support this.
If you have some video tutorial it would be great.
I hope that my explanation is good.
    Thank you.

    • You can certainly do all that. If the content for translation is part of the post/page, WPML will translate it as a new post. If it’s hard-coded in the theme, wrap in GetText calls and translation with the String Translation module.

  6. Hello,

I would like to make sure that it will work with this template monster template. I have been looking for your plug in for a while and am glad I found it but want to make sure it will work before I purchase.

    Mahalo!
    Gary

    • We haven’t tested WPML with this theme. We’ll be happy to create a free account for the theme authors, so that they can test it and work with us to iron-out any compatibility issues.

Most themes today run fine on multilingual sites with WPML. In case you have any trouble with your theme, we’ll refund your order immediately.

  7. Hi There,

My name is Bhavin and I am from ZATUN Game Development Studio,

Actually we have a wordpress Site; http://zatun.com and we are looking for translation Plugin for it as we come across your plugin. It looks good to us and we are looking forward to download it as well but before that I would like to ask you a question. Actually I heard that this translation plugins are spam for Google and i was checking through web i found this interesting post; http://www.labnol.org/software/wordpress-language-translation-plugins-to-avoid/13288/

Please have a look at it and let me know that does your plugin as well spam for Google?

Please guide us and let us know more about your plugin.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to your reply,

    Regards,

    Bhavin

    • Google employees clearly state that publishing automated translation as your own content is a bad thing for them. If you want to use automated translation, you should install their widget which lets Google translate your site on-the-fly. This is fine and works great – as far as automated translations go.

WPML is a tool for writing your own translations, not for storing machine translation. Here are different ways to manage translations with WPML:
      http://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/

      • Hi Mr. Amir,

        Thanks for your reply,

So you mean if we use Google Translator and Translate our own existing post and Re-post it again that it will be illegal, Right? So we need to hire some one to translate all the post manually and than we re-post all the post again in different languages.

        • It’s not illegal and you’re not going to jail for it. Google just doesn’t like it and treats it as spam content. You should have a human translation and not machine translation as your content.

  8. Hello,

I would like to ask if WPML CMS translates custom fields.

I’m developing a complex website that does extensive uses of custom fields and I was considering multiple options for managing multiple languages.

The custom fields are used with custom meta boxes, each page has more than one visual editor and some textfields and select, radio, every part of the website needs to be translatable.

Thank You very much for your time

    Regards,

    Antonio

      • Thank you very much for your quick reply.

        I have one more question.

Some of the links are manually entered in custom fields which means they will have the format http://site.com/category/postname does WPML CMS handle this kind of links?

Unfortunately it would be impossible to insert the links in a php way for many reasons including simplicity of usage for the end user

        Kind Regards,

        Antonio

        • Maybe using the automatic browser detection it wouldn’t matter if the links are hardcoded??

Should it use automatically the translated version independently of what is typed in the browser?

          and one last question

Is it possible, using automatic browser detection to switch from a language to another?

My apology for the many question but I need to be sure to be able to use the plugin before asking the client to buy it.

          Kind Regards,

          Antonio Giordano

          • I’m not sure what you mean with this last question. In any case, if you purchase WPML, our support people will do their best to help you achieve what you need. I’m pretty sure that these things are possible to do, one way or another.

And, if you’re still not happy with your purchase, you can always get your money back.

          • Thank You Amir that was what I was looking for It seems like wpml is the right choice.

My apology for the multiple silly questions.

            You have a new client

            Antonio

    • We haven’t tested WPML with ClassiPress. Anyway, if you buy it and have any sort of trouble, we can always refund your purchase (and we’ll be very happy to support you and get things working).

  9. Technically, will I have one site? Comments for each language will appear only when selecting that language, or will they feed all the languages where the article is posted?

    • You will have one site, like you see here on wpml.org. The same site will have different languages. Each post in a different language will have its comments.

  10. Will the plugin work with non pre-defined languages such as catalan? would it still be compatible with most of the themes? thanks!

    • Yes. You can add any language that you like. WPML and most themes are compatible and we’re very happy to work with theme authors to make sure it works smooth on any theme.

  11. Hi,

I’m using the free WPML version for a couple of years now. I’d like to buy the new commercial version for better performance and support questions.

How will the upgrade be? Automaticly? Any risks on bugs or website downtime?

I run WPML on a number of commercial websites.

    thanks for the great work!

    Bart

    • The current version of WPML includes major changes from the very old 2.0.4.1, which is the last one released on wp.org. We’ve taken great care to make sure it’s compatible, but you should still backup your database before doing this upgrade.

To upgrade, you should upload the new ZIP file manually, in the first time. Then, you’ll be able to enter your subscription key and keep enjoying automated upgrades.

  12. hello. We are running a blog with wordpress 3.3.1 with a theme from themforest (catalyst)

i Think we just need the blogger version and not the cms..
I would love to know if later i can upgrade from the blogger to the cms
with a discount of the money already payed

and if we upgrade if our contents will be preserved or erase from the new plugin installation.
thank you for let me know.

    bsts, fede

    • You can upgrade later if you need and pay just the difference. No content are changed when you updated. You will just have access to additional modules, like String Translation.

    • It would be best if the theme author worked with us to check this. We give free WPML accounts to theme authors who want to make their themes multilingual-ready:
      http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/go-global-program/

The text in the home page will be translatable if they pass through any translation filter. If these are static texts, they should be wrapped in GetText code. If they are dynamic texts and stored in the wp_options table, WPML should make them translatable too. Some themes store texts in special places (like their own tables), so WPML has no access to it.

  13. Hi there, we’re running the latest version of WP with a fairly old theme, iNove, that we’ve made extensive modifications to. Everything works well except now we’re getting requests for French language translations for some of our pages.

Trying to do some research here for a possible solution. Could you please see the following questions?

    1. We will only have a handful of pages in a foreign language, out of hundreds. I am really really concerned about performance. How big of a hit on our current regular English pages will it be to install your plugin sitewide? (i.e., how much overhead would be added?)

    2. Our permalink structure is “/%postname%.html” and cannot be changed. I thought I read elsewhere on this site that one like that could be a problem with WPML. Is it?

    3. We use Gregs’ High Performance SEO plugin and really love it, and don’t want to switch. We also use the popular Google XML Sitemaps plugin by Arne. Will we be able to get Per-Language Sitemaps with WPML? If not, how would we proceed so that Google wouldn’t reject it?

    4. How about RSS feeds, how do those work with your system? Would it keep our current English feed and link, and then add a separate new one for the French posts?

    5. No problem on paying first with the refund policy. Do you recommend any easy way for us to try WPML out without affecting a live production site? Can it be quickly and completely backed out if it doesn’t work right for some reason?

Thank you so much, really appreciate it!

    • 1. WPML will increase the number of queries required to display the content. The amount of increase depends on how your theme is built. If it loads a whole lot of pages by specific ID, each of these will add 2 extra queries. If your site just runs a simple WordPress loop, the performance change will be barely noticeable.

      2. WPML doesn’t have a specific problem with this URL structure. WordPress versions prior to 3.3 had a serious performance and stability problem with this, as it generated a huge number of rewrite rules. It’s been significantly improved in WP 3.3.

      3. I have’t tested this SEO plugin. We use wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-seo/ which is a very powerful and convenient plugin and is also fully compatible with WPML.

      4. You’ll get a different feed per language, like we have – wpml.org/es/feed/

      5. We NEVER install major plugins, or even small plugin on our production site first. We have a staging server where we try things before rolling to the production site. Downtime costs us money. You can easily uninstall WPML and it will not leave any trace behind or change your content. Still, you shouldn’t experiment with a production site. At least, we don’t.

      • OK great – thanks a lot for the fast response Amir, it is very much appreciated and helpful.

It sounds like a good thing and an improvement that we’re on WP 3.3.1 for the permalink structure.

It also sounds like our current RSS feed link (English) wouldn’t change, and we could just add new links for different languages with a subdirectory suffix like in your example.

Point noted about a staging server, thank you. We may have to set one up to test this.

Regarding sitemaps, still unclear about that one a bit. Our SEO plugin does not generate the sitemaps – for that we use “Google XML Sitemaps” (by Arne) which does it separately. Have you ever tried that one with WPML?

Because if we don’t use the plugin you suggest (which does both SEO + sitemaps), it sounds like we may get unpredictable results with multiple language sitemaps… Do you plan to add support soon for other popular sitemap generation plugins?

        Thanks again!

  14. Before I purchase this plugin, will it support Arabic with no issues? Another thing is, if i will use a WordPress theme generated by Site Grinder (SG3 Xpress), will there any incompatibilities?

    • WordPress and WPML will run just fine with Arabic characters. WPML’s interface is also fully translated to Arabic.

I’m not familiar with that theme. If the theme author is interested, we can check this together.
