This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client's website content was incorrectly assigned to English after copying the Dutch content from an old website to a new one.
Solution:
We recommended two approaches depending on whether the client had already translated any content:
1. If no translations were made, we suggested re-installing WPML.
2. If translations existed, we advised duplicating the content in bulk from English to Dutch and then deleting the English content. We provided a documentation link for assistance: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/displaying-untranslated-content-on-pages-in-secondary-languages/#how-to-duplicate-pages-and-posts-in-bulk.
After the client shared the necessary credentials, we proceeded with re-installing WPML and asked for confirmation that the issue was resolved and the languages were correctly assigned.

Please note that this solution might be irrelevant if it's outdated or not applicable to your case. If you're still experiencing issues, we highly recommend checking the related known issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the problem persists, please open a new support ticket with us.

Hi,

I had a call with Christopher. He told me that the plugin is installed wrong.

Tell us what you are trying to do?
I am migrating my website hidden link (Dutch) to hidden link (English). I put it on a staging site first: staging.theworldtrippers.com.

The Dutch variant of the site needs to be on .com/nl/ and that needs to be translated to English. English need to be on .com (main language)

Is there any documentation that you are following?
-

Is there a similar example that we can see?
-

What is the link to your site?
hidden link

Can you help me to install this correctly?

Kind regards,
Leon van Essen

Hello Leon,
Thank you for contacting us

I'm sorry but I don't quite understand the issue. According to the screenshots you shared the configuration seems to be correct. Could you elaborate a little more so I can have a better understanding of the problem?

Regards,
Carlos

Hello Carlos,

My old website (wanderlustig.nl) is copied to theworldtrippers.com. So all my Dutch content is now English according to WPML. Christopher Amirian told me this in a meeting. Can you contact him? Maybe he can explain it better. It is the first time that I use WPML.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.

If you haven't translated any content yet, the best solution will be to re-install WPML. Otherwise, you will need to duplicate the content in bulk from English to Dutch and then delete the content in English, as described in this link: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/displaying-untranslated-content-on-pages-in-secondary-languages/#how-to-duplicate-pages-and-posts-in-bulk

I can help you in both scenarios, could you tell me if you have translated the content already?

Hi Leon,

I can't request the credentials via email. I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

Our Debugging Procedures

I will be checking various settings in the backend to see if the issue can be resolved. Although I won't be making changes that affect the live site, it is still good practice to back up the site before providing us access. If we do need to debug the site further, I will duplicate the site and work in a separate, local development environment to avoid affecting the live site.

Hi Leon,
Thank you for sharing the credentials requested.

I have re-installed WPML, could you confirm that now the issue is solved and the languages are correctly assigned to the content?

Hi Carlos,

The installation is correct now. I attached some screenshots. The Dutch blogs are under the Dutch flag. The only issue now is that the permalinks are not right. A Dutch blog is now under .com/azie/.... instead of .com/nl/azie/... The English translation should be under .com/asia/...

How do I fix this?

Hi,

This is the correct and expected URL structure. The default language (Dutch) doesn't have the language directory in the URL, just the secondary language (EN) has the /en/ directory in the URL.

Hi Carlos,

I want to use English as my main language. From SEO point of view that is way more intereseing. .com/en/ is weird and it must be .com/nl/. How can I do it?

Kind regards,
Leon

Hi Leon,

In this case, you will have to change the default language of the site in WPML -> Languages.

Please read this guide before changing the default language of the site: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/displaying-untranslated-content-on-pages-in-secondary-languages/manage-archive-listings-default-language-change/

Hi Carlos,

Thank you for this helpful article. Just to be 100% sure: first translate the website to English and then change the default language?

"Before changing the default language, you can do the following to ensure your archive listings display posts correctly:

Option 1: Translate all your content to the new default language. Ensure all your posts are translated into the language you intend to make your new default language. If you have a lot of content and need to speed up the translation process, you can use automatic translation.
Option 2: Duplicate Existing Posts: Duplicate your existing post types, including pages, products, and other custom posts, to the new default language."

Hi Lein,

Yes, it will be better to translate the content first, before changing the default language 🙂

Hello,

I have someone who help me with the SEO migration of this site. He says this:

"So, now we need to copy all the posts and pages and then need to do automatic translation. Can I start the pages and posts copy work?"

"Posts and pages weren't coming com/nl and I have fixed it."

"I have checked these one and now we can create pages and posts on the both language but don't have any automatic option like if we create posts and pages with dutch language and then it's automatically translate to English."

"The com/en is not working. We need to copy all the pages and posts and then need to automatic or manually translate to English language for making the .com on the English."

"If you have any doubt then you can ask to support about copying the website pages and posts to make the .com website on English and then let me know."

So I am confused now what to do. What are the steps right now? I enabled the pay-as-you-go method. So Do I need to run the translations or copying the pages and blogs first?
