Tell us what you are trying to do?

We cloned the website from another one and we want to delete old WPML strings and translations that were used on the old website. The reason is that when we are trying to add a new translation on the new website, some strings are used from the old website.

This is our website: hidden link

Hello,

I would suggest you use the WordPress Backend for this purpose, as translations are connected through various tables, and deleting the pages directly from the backend will make sure that all necessary queries will run in order to update the tables.

Details:
https://wpml.org/documentation/support/wpml-tables/

For example:

Go to your Pages list, use the language filter, or switch the language inside the top admin bar.
Now mark the pages that would like to translate again and delete them.
Afterward, remove the translated pages from the trash bin.

Best regards
Andreas

Hi Andreas. Thanks for your reply!

We already deleted all translated pages and only kept the original pages in English. Still, when we want to translate a new page and it contains the same label, it will be prefilled with a string from the old website.

Will translating more pages with new content overwrite the old archive? For example, if we keep translating labels "Text" to "Text ES" on the new website instead of using "Text JP" that was prefilled from the old website. Thanks!

Hello,

Yes, this is coming from the translation memory of the WPML Translation Editor which is running on an external server.

If you agree, I can try to reset the translation memory for this website on our system.

Best regards
Andreas

Hello Andreas!

Thanks, that sounds just like what we need. Will this also delete existing translations on the website? Or only the translation memory? Please let me know!

Hello,

No, the translations of your website are saved inside the WordPress database.

Deleting the translation memory and our server that runs Advanced Translation Editor will not affect the current translations on your website.

Should I proceed now by deleting the translation memory?

If so, please quickly confirm for which site URL(s) you would like to clear the memory.

Take note that if you merge sites to share translation credits and memory, then this will have an effect on various sites.

Best regards
Andreas

Hello,

I am sorry for asking once more, I only want to make sure that we will not have any misunderstanding on this matter.

Your content by default was created in English, correct?

(Please correct me if I am wrong here)

I see on our system only one translated this content so far:

/en/blog/passing-the-jlpt-n5/

You translated it into Italian and 3600 of your 10.000 credits were used for this purpose.

The translation memory of your site has until now 200 entries and they might all refer to this blog article that was translated - seems nothing else was translated yet, is this correct?

Now, English was the source language when translated into Italian in this example.

If I delete the translation memory now, it should remove these 200 entries which would be a translation memory from English to Italian for the article mentioned above,.

Translation memory always only works from the source language to the target language.

Now, according to your debug information, actually, Italian is not an active language on the site.

As for now, according to what I see you would translate from from:
EN > ES
EN > KR
EN > JP
EN > ZH

According to what I see there should not be any translation memory on the system for those languages.

Can you confirm please, before I take this step, as it is not redoable if I delete the memory?

Also take note, that if you used automatic translation credits for creating your translations earlier, then the memory created from those credits will be lost and we can not refund those credits or recover the translation memory at any point.

If you agree, I can offer to enable the private reply form for you to provide me admin access to the site, so that I can have a closer look and verify how far resetting translation memory could affect your site.

Let me know if this would be alright and I will enable the private reply form.

Best regards
Andreas
