This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client wanted to hide the main language on the front end for non-admin users because it was not ready for public viewing. They were also considering switching the main language to a translated language and were concerned about potential data loss or issues.

Solution:
We informed the client that it is not possible to hide the default language using WPML's 'Hide languages' feature, as it only allows hiding secondary languages. We suggested using a Maintenance Mode plugin to hide the entire site from users until it is ready. Here is an example of such a plugin:

Additionally, we advised that if the client has original content that is not ready to be published, they should set this content as 'Draft' in WordPress. This is not related to WPML, as WPML only handles translations of the original content. For more information on drafts, please visit:

Hello,

No, this is sadly not possible.

If you go to WPML > Languages > Hide languages you will see that you can only disable any second language apart from the the site's default language.

I do sadly not have a workaround for this issue.

Maybe you should use a Maintenance Mode Plugin to hide the entire content from the users until the site is ready.

Example:

Hi Andreas,
i need to go Online with the first language. cant finish the others yet.
I dont think there are maintanace plugins for wpml that just do maintanace mode for one domain.

Can i switch the main language to the translated language? do i loose anything when i do that?
If I try this, what do I have to watch out for? (Except that I make backups in advance)

thank you in advance

Hello,

If you have original content, that is not ready for publishing, then you can set this content as "Draft" in WordPress.

hidden link

This is not a WPML topic, as WPML only creates translations from your original content.

About the "www"-redirect issues I can offer to split this issue into a new ticket and follow up with this about you from there.

Best regards
Andreas
