This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is attempting to add flags to the main menu using WPML's Language Switcher options but is encountering issues. The flags do not appear in the menu, and the settings seem to reset upon returning to the WPML-Language settings.
Solution:
If you're experiencing issues with adding flags to your main menu and your changes are not being saved, we recommend you try clearing your browser cache as a first step. This can often resolve issues with changes not appearing due to cached content.

If clearing the cache does not solve the problem, please open a new support ticket with us, and we'll be happy to assist you further.

Tell us what you are trying to do?

Putting flags in the main menu. Either I go via WPML - Languages - Menu Language Switcher (there I cannot select Top-Menu in the Choose-Menu DropDown) or I go via Appearance- Menus - Add a Language switcher. This seems to work, but not really as the changes seem not to be saved. The flags do not appear in the menu and the next time to to the WPML-Language settings, the setttings are reset to no flags.

Is there any documentation that you are following?

Is there a similar example that we can see?

What is the link to your site?

Thank you for contacting WPML support.

Could you please upload screenshots showing the issue so I can better understand it?

What are the results if you temporarily deactivate all the plugins except WPML?

Please backup your database before making any changes.

I had to go to the original language in the top bar in WordPress (in my case, click on the German flag) and then I could set everything up via Appearance --> Add Language Switcher.

I just realized that the flags now only appear in the backend of wordpress. They do not show up once I open the site in an icognito window. (Pictures attached).

I also reported a fatal error caused by the WPML Multilingual Plug-In in a separate ticket, that might be related to the problem. Many thanks, Ralph

Thank you for your feedback. After reviewing your website, I noticed the language switcher. Have you tried clearing your browser cache?

I have taken over your other support ticket.
