[Resolved] Page reverting to base language (English) on save
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: If you're experiencing issues where changes made to a translated page in German (DE) are not being saved and instead revert to English (EN), and this behavior persists even after editing, it might be due to the settings or a specific bug in the WPML plugin. Solution: We recommend backing up your production site and updating the WPML plugin to the latest version, which as of now is 4.7.6. You can download the update from https://wpml.org/account/downloads/. This update addresses an edge case where the original post designed using a page builder would override a translation edited natively, as noted in the changelog here. If updating does not resolve the issue, please contact us for further assistance. We may need to escalate this to our 2nd Tier Support team for direct investigation.
Please note that this solution might be irrelevant if it's outdated or not applicable to your case. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the problem persists, do not hesitate to open a new support ticket here.
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
1. when I make any change to the DE page and save, it’s not actually saved. DE reverts to EN.
2. In addition #1, if I edit the DE (which is now in EN) and save, it doesn’t save that change either; it reverts to the EN content again
3. when I modify EN, then save, that change shows in EN (as expected). When I then reload DE, it loads the modified EN.
This seems to imply that DE is somewhere set to mirror EN. That the button does not appear is the problem.
Thanks for your reply. I can replicate the issue as shown in the attached screen recording hidden link
I regret any inconvenience caused, but to proceed with troubleshooting, I kindly ask for a snapshot of the site. Alternatively, with your permission, I can create one myself. For this purpose, I typically recommend using the free plugin "Duplicator." If you're already familiar with Duplicator (https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/), please skip the following steps and simply send me the archive file you downloaded.
To guide you further, please adhere to these instructions:
1. View the Duplicator instructions video: hidden link
3. If the archive file exceeds 400MB, please use Duplicator's file filters to exclude cache, wp-uploads directory, media, and archive files.
Once you have the archive file ready, kindly share the link with us. You can utilize platforms like Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar for file sharing, as the snapshot file might be large.
Please note that your next reply will be private, visible only to you and me. You can paste the file link there. Rest assured that once the issue is resolved, I will delete the local site.
Thanks for your reply. It looks like creating a duplicator copy is not possible due to some restrictions. Could you share access to the staging site so that we could troubleshoot this without interrupting your production site?
Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.
Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.
Thank you for your patience. I attempted to import the site into my local development environment, but encountered numerous fatal errors, as shown in the attached screenshot. Could you please provide access to a staging site instead? Once I have access, I’ll escalate this to our 2nd Tier Support team for further investigation. Apologies once again for any inconvenience caused.
Thanks for your reply. We've released an update v4.7.5 and according to the changelog here https://wpml.org/download/wpml-multilingual-cms/?section=changelog , this version should "Fixed an edge case where the original post designed using a page builder would override a translation edited natively."
Thank you for your patience. I've checked the staging site, and it is functioning correctly even before updating WPML to version 4.7.5, so it seems the issue is isolated to the production site.
Please back up the production site and update the WPML plugin to the latest version 4.7.6, which you can download here: https://wpml.org/account/downloads/ . If the issue continues on the production site, I’ll escalate this to our 2nd Tier Support team for direct investigation, as we’re unable to reproduce the problem on staging.
