Problem: The client needs to set up three different regions for their site: EMEA (primary), North America/US, and APAC. Both EMEA and APAC should use British English, while North America/US should use American English. They want to use DeepL for translations but are facing issues with language mapping for different English variations. Solution: 1. We explained that automatic translation in WPML works based on language mapping settings. Since the site's default language is English, it cannot be automatically translated into other English variations (American or British English) using WPML. 2. For content in different English variations, the client will need to manually add translations using the Translation Editor. 3. We suggested that if the content is the same across the different regions, the client could duplicate the pages instead of translating them. 4. I understand your requirements. WPML's predefined language list includes English but does not include its variations(British and American English). As a result, you will need to set up these variations as custom languages within WPML to achieve what you're looking for.
DeepL supports British and American English, so you shouldn't encounter any difficulties translating your content into these languages. But, please make sure to configure the Language mapping and other properties for these custom languages so that the Translation engine can recognize them. The documentation above should provide clear guidance on these configurations.

I tried to set that up but I must have done something wrong. When I tried to set up automatic translations, I got an error saying "Your selected automatic translation engines do not support the following language(s): APAC, US. Read more about choosing a translation engine."
I've attached a screenshot of my Languages setting. Can you give me some guidance on how to fix this? I'm getting very confused. 🙂

The automatic translation in WPML works based on the language mapping settings. Based on the screenshot, the default language for your site is set to English, it is automatically mapped to English. However, for the other variations of English that you've created (such as American English or British English), you're trying to map these variations to the default English as well.
This results in an English-to-English translation setup, which is not logical. It doesn't allow for meaningful translation between distinct languages, which is why you're encountering warning messages suggesting that custom language variations should be mapped to a different language.
To clarify further:
- If the default language of your site is something other than English, you should be able to use the automatic translation feature to translate content into English without any issues.
- However, since the primary language of your site is already English, the plugin cannot automatically translate the default English content into other English language variations, such as American or British English. In this case, you will need to add the translations for the different English variations manually using the Translation editor.

Thank you for your thorough response. I want to make sure I understand--there's no way right now to translate from American English to British English or vice versa. Is that correct?
Is that a limitation of WPML? Or the translation engines? If it's a limitation of WPML, is there any plan to change that in the future?
Additionally, what if I add in another language? If I translate from American English into Spanish could I then translate Spanish into British English? Or will that not work as long as the primary language is English?

1. As they are using the same language mapping you cannot use automatic translations, if the content is the same you can duplicate the pages. At the moment we only support one type of language as you can see here: hidden link
2. You can translate it into spanish and then into english but the content will be the same.
