Background of the issue:
We have an English-USA and an English-Canada language on the site (currently the selector is hidden). I want to translate the page using 'duplicate' to keep the content synced between the two on the majority of pages. The site is using ACF flexible fields.
Symptoms:
Not all the URLs on the page for English-Canada update to include the 'en-ca' in the links, only some. For example, the URL hidden link has links properly translating, but the button at the bottom of the page under the title 'People + Process + Product = Success' does not update for en-ca.
Questions:
Why are some URLs not updating to include 'en-ca' in the links?
How can I ensure all URLs update correctly for English-Canada?
Is there a specific setting in WPML or ACF that needs adjustment?
Welcome to the WPML support forum. We generally recommend using the "Duplicate" option when clients need different designs for each language. However, in this case, it also makes sense since both languages are English-based.
Here are a few important considerations when using this option:
- The WPML Translation Editor should be disabled, and you should use the WordPress editor instead.
- When you duplicate a page, the duplicated version remains synchronized with the original. This means that any changes made to the English (US) version will also apply to the English (CA) version.
- Regarding the links, since duplication creates an exact, synchronized copy with our editor disabled, automatic translation of links (like the button you mentioned) might not always occur. But here I have an explanation: you inserted a relative link /company/contact-us/, you need to use full path links hidden link else WPML wont be able to translate them.
- To make independent changes to the duplicated page, open the translation and can click "Translate independently".
This stops synchronization and allows you to make specific edits, such as updating your relative links, changing prices from USD to CAD or customizing small language differences.
