Background of the issue:
I switched the main language from German to English using WPML, expecting usual functionality with translations from English to German.

Symptoms:
Pages that are in English will no longer be translated to German. When I manually translate something from the German page, it automatically creates the old version of the page in English. This is ruining my page structure and affecting SEO.

Questions:
Why are pages not translating from English to German after switching the main language?
Why does manual translation from German create an old version of the page in English?

Hi,

Thanks for contacting WPML forums support. I'll be glad to help you today.

First of all, sorry for the late reply; it was due to a higher workload.

If the existing pages are initially created in German and translated before switching the language, then the pages' default language is German, not English.

If you want to translate these pages from English to German, you will need to disconnect the translation and re-connect them to set English as the default language. In this case, you will be able to translate from English to German.

Kindly check these guides to learn more about disconnecting translations and connecting them again.

Best regards,
Osama

Hello Osama,

if I disconnect the translation and re-connect it, will the content that I currently have translated in both languages get lost, do I have to redo the translations again or do they remain?

Hi,

They should remain on the front end, but you might need to re-translate some segments in the translation editor.

Please take a full backup of the site, and apply this approach to only one page/post to see the results.

Kindly let me know if this test post works as expected.

Best regards,
Osama
