I am trying to:
edit languages in the database. it seems to have worked regarding the slugs and the hreflang tags, but the display in the backend is not updating. flags & language names have been updated in the database, but are not updated in the backend. wpml cache is flushed, no other cache in use

I expected to see:

the updates i implemented in the database

Instead, I got:

no updates

images:

only the name for German (Germany) has updated, the others not.

Hello,

Welcome to the WPML support forum. I will do my best to help you to resolve the issue.

Have you edited the language name directly from the database table? If so, edit the languages directly from the database is not recommended. Because it is stored in multiple tables and may break the database relationships.

Therefore please try the steps suggested in the following ticket after a site backup and let us know your feedback.

this does not work and I already tried it.

I started edited in the database after your colleague recommended it.

Once a language is added, it cannot be edited in the setting you recommend.

Hello,

Thank you for the details and login information. This requires further testing. So please allow me to make a duplicator copy of your site using the Duplicator plugin(https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/) for debugging the issue on my local server. It will help us to troubleshoot the issue without affecting your live site.

Hello,

Thank you for the permission. I made a copy of the site and installed it locally.

One doubt. For which languages do you want to edit the language names? Please check the attached image and share more information on this.

Hello,

Thank you for the details. I had a few rounds of testing in my local copy and got the expected results after editing the *english_name* column of wp_icl_languages table and clearing WPML Caches. Also, the language names of the site frontend(in the language switcher) are changed after editing it from WPML>>Languages>>Edit Languages.

Please refer to the following screencast for more details and let us know your feedback.

thanks, this doesnt solve my issue though.

I have implemented these changes in the php admin, but they dont update on the website.

so, the fact that they do update when you run it locally, does not solve the issue on my website.

Can you help me figure out why it works on your local setup, but not my website?

thanks
