Problem:
If you're experiencing issues where translations imported via an XLIFF file only appear on the frontend and not in the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE), and changes made in ATE overwrite the imported translations, here's what you need to know.

Solution:
This behavior occurs because translations made with the Classic Translation Editor (CTE) are saved on your site, while ATE translations are stored on our server's Translation Memory. When you complete a translation in ATE, it overrides any manual translations on your site. To avoid this:
1. Choose one translation editor for the page and stick with it.
2. If you switch from ATE to CTE, your translations won't be lost as they are saved in the Translation Memory. However, switching back to ATE later will result in the loss of translations made with CTE.
3. Consider creating a user for the translation company on your site as a local translator, allowing them to review translations directly without exporting/importing XLIFF files. Alternatively, after receiving proofread files, update the text manually in ATE.

When I import an XLIFF file in the transaction basket/que the uploaded file with its changes only shows in the frontend. But when I open up the Advanced Translation Editor in the WordPress dashboard/ backend the changes are not there. And if I then change anything in the Translation editor the imported text gets overwritten and deleted from the frontend.

Thank you for contacting WPML support, I'd be happy to help you with this issue.

It is expected behavior when you switch the translation editor to translate content on your site. Let me explain more about this.

When you export/import XLIFF file on your site, that means you are using the WPML Classic Translation Editor (CTE), and the translation is made on your site.

When you click on the Pen icon and go to the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE), the translation content is not there because it is not saved to the Translation Memory which is stored on our server.

When you click on Complete translation in ATE, the translation content is sent back to your site and override all translation you made manually on your site. That's why the text "test" is lost.

Hi Long,

Aha okay, then I understand. But if so I have some follow-up questions on how we should proceed in the best way.

Some background info: We started with the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) since it's default and because we wanted to use the automatic translation. So all our content, pages, posts, temples, Woocommrece Products, etc. are automatically translated.

But we need to export all our content to XLIFF, XML or XLF files because we are gonna send it to a translation company who will proofread everything. How should we do this in the best way now when we started with the ATE?

1) What will happen if we now change the settings and switch to Classic Translation Editor (CTE)? Will we lose all of the automatically translated content?

2) Or can we somehow export/ import our content and still use the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE)?

Hi,

1. No, the translated content is saved to the translation memory on our server and it won't be lost. If you switch to CTE, everything still works. But later you switch to ATE, the translated content with CTE will be lost. 2. There are some options for you in this case:

- Create a user for the translation company on your site and set the user as a local translator. Then they can review the automatic translation content on your site directly, without exporting/importing XLIFF files. - Or after receiving the proofread file from the translation company, you have to change the text manually in ATE.

Hi Long,

I will look into this during the day and review my options.

But will it work if I do this:

1) Switch from ATE to CTE
2) Export XLIFF files
3) Import the proofread XLIFF files

If it works, I'm aware that we can't switch back to ATE again, without losing the translated content with CTE.

Yes, it works. But please notice that, the translation after proofreading is made on your site (CTE) and if you want to use ATE later, you have to update the translation manually in ATE. Otherwise, the translation content in ATE will override the content on your site after completing the translation.

So have I understood it correctly then, that the CTE translations are saved/stored locally on our site, och translations made with ATE are saved/stored on our server (= in WPML translation memory).
