This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is experiencing issues with translating content after mapping it to English GB while using a custom language with the language code en-gb. Adding glossary terms also fails. They are further concerned about how the URL will display for different language versions and whether the system will change the URL when duplicating content for English UK.

Solution:
1. The English mapping option can only be used once and is already utilized for the site's default language. We recommend duplicating the original English content to English UK and English AU.

2. WPML will automatically handle the URL display for different language versions. Each language has a code in WPML > Languages > Edit languages, which will be used in the URL format. For example, if the site is set to "Directories per language" and you create a custom language using the code "en-gb", then English UK will be available at http://www.sitename.com/en/.

3. If you create a duplicate for English UK, you will find it at: https://www.sitename.com/en-gb/yourpage. The original site URL and other URLs will remain unchanged.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems outdated, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the problem persists, please open a new support ticket at WPML support forum.

Background of the issue:
I have set up en English GB but system will not translate why I have mapped it to English and add glossary terms for the English GB version. The site I need help with is hidden link.

Symptoms:
The system will not translate the content even though I have mapped it to English and added glossary terms for the English GB version.

Questions:
Why is the system not translating the content after mapping it to English and adding glossary terms for the English GB version?

Hi there.

Can you also please share with us a screenshot from inside WPML > Languages > Edit Languages > so that we can see what settings you added for that language?

We will be waiting for your response.

Thank you.

Could you please send a screenshot that also shows the settings for the site's default language?

As long language code, default locale and hreflang are different between site default language (English) and your custom language (English UK) it should work.

Hello,

My apologies, I see that when refreshing the page the setting reverts, and did not correctly recall this behavior at the moment, but it is still expected.

Automatic translation currently works only from the site's default language into other languages.

It is explained in our documentation that it is currently not possible to map custom language to the same language as the site's default language.

Source:
https://wpml.org/documentation/automatic-translation/using-automatic-translation-with-custom-languages/?utm_source=plugin&utm_medium=gui&utm_campaign=wpmlcore#mapping-a-custom-secondary-language-to-your-sites-default-language

This behavior might change in a future version of WPML.

For now, I would suggest you duplicate the original English contents to English UK and English AU.

Complete guide:
https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/displaying-untranslated-content-on-pages-in-secondary-languages/

Let me know if you have further questions.

Best regards
Andreas

Can u help more on this duplicate option please...

Will the URL display reflect that the duplicate is for example an American version of the page

Like in the example of a competitor below, I see many site that work as below, are they using a different translation plugin?

Yes, the duplicate will create a post or pages in second language with its proper ID inside the database.

The difference is, that WPML will always overwrite this duplicate once the original content was edited and saved and this way it will maintain the same content in all languages.

Apart from that, you could later on mark such duplicates as independent translations and translate them manually with the WordPress Editor.

WPML will by default use the registered language code from WPML's settings.

You will need to register the custom language using the language code "en-gb" in this case.
