This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client needs to maintain WPML settings on a development server that was backed up and downloaded from a live website using a migration plugin. They also want to register a new WPML account for use with the development server without affecting the live site.
Solution:
1. Generate a developer key from your WPML.org account.
2. Register the development website with the new key by navigating to Wp-Admin -> Plugins -> Add New -> Commercial tab, then click on "Unregister WPML from this site" and register with the new site key.
3. Refresh the page after registration.
For detailed steps, refer to the documentation on how to install and register WPML on development sites.

Note: Unregistering WPML from the local site will not affect the live site. Using a staging/development site typically does not incur additional costs unless new translations are requested.

Tell us what you are trying to do?
Hi, how can I keep WPML settings on the dev server which was backed up and downloaded via wp migration plugin from the live website domain but register a new WPML account to use with the dev server? Thanks

Is there any documentation that you are following?

Is there a similar example that we can see?

What is the link to your site?

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML Support, I will gladly help you.

Normally the settings should be the same, after the migration you'll need to generate the developer key from your WPML.org account (which you already did).

After, you just need to register the development website with the new key.
You can UNregister WPML and RE-register WPML from Wp-Admin -> Plugins > Add new > Commercial > y.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Regards,
Marsel

If I press unregister on the local server will it affect the live website? I do not want anything happening to the live site If I press deregister from the local staging website. Thanks

Hi,

The local site shouldn't affect anything in the live site if you unregister it, you can follow these steps one by one (if needed):

1. Login to your WPML account >> Go to the Sites page:
https://wpml.org/account/sites/
2. Create a new key for your site as a development.
3. Visit the Wp-Admin -> Plugins -> Add New -> Commercial tab.
4. Click on the “Unregister WPML from this site” button.
5. Register with the new site key and refresh the page.

Here is a documentation for more details:
https://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/#register-development-sites

Please let me know if this resolves your issue or if you need further assistance with this issue.

Regards,
Marsel

Thanks for the reply, ok i have some scenarios

1. the staging site, will this cost anymore ie credits etc we are testing some custom PHP but don't need anything more translated?

2. I want to use WPML on another new website as well but keep the settings I have on this website and account, but use a new WPML account. I want to take a copy of this website with all settings via wp all in one migration, then add the backup and files to the new website but be able to use a NEW WPML account with it.

Thanks

Hi,

1) Using a staging/development site typically won't cost additional credits if you're not requesting additional translations (meaning, if you translate something, you'll be charged).

2) To use WPML on a new website with a different WPML account while keeping the settings from your current website, you can follow the same steps as I mentioned in my previous reply, you can unregister WPML on the new website and then activate it again by registering the website in the new WPML account with a new key.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Kind regards,
Marsel
