This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is experiencing issues with translating a blog post using WPML. After saving the translation as a draft and refreshing, the fields do not update, and the post does not show as a translation of the original. The client has to manually link it, and only some fields like the featured image are updated.
Solution:
1. We recommended the client to provide a video of the steps and the issue using tools like LOOM to better understand the problem.
2. We suggested disabling any security or cache plugins that might be interfering with the translation process and check if the issue persists.
3. We advised trying the duplicate and translate method as outlined in our documentation here: Using Different Translation Editors for Different Pages.
4. It is important to use 'Translate Independently' option after duplicating to ensure the content does not get overwritten when the original post is updated.

If these steps do not resolve the issue or if the solution seems outdated or irrelevant to your specific case, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the problem persists, please open a new support ticket at WPML support forum.

Background of the issue:
I'm writing a new blog post on my site hidden link using WPML. I usually write in Spanish or English and prepare the post with all necessary elements like featured image, review fields, post setup, category, and tags. I then click on the + sign to translate it into another language. Previously, after saving as draft and refreshing, all fields would update as configured.

Symptoms:
Now, when I translate the post and save as draft, refreshing does not update any fields, and the post does not show as a translation of the original. I have to manually link it, and only some fields like the featured image are updated.

Questions:
Why are the fields not updating after saving as draft and refreshing?
Why is the post not automatically linked as a translation of the original?

Hello,

thanks for contacting us.

1) I am not 100% sure what happened, could you please provide a video of your steps and what went wrong? You can use free tools like LOOM.

2) If you use any security or cache plugin like object cache, please disable it and check again if the issue still happens.

Regards,
Drazen

Hi Drazen,

Thank you for the response. I've uploaded a screen recording to the following link:

I disabled my security and cache plugins before recording this.

Hello,

thanks for getting back and sharing a video, I see translations are not connected, but not sure why do you use such a method, did you try to duplicate and translate like we suggest in our docs for the manual method?

Let me know if that helps.

Drazen

Hm...

The documentation only mentions pages, not posts. That's why I never used the duplicate function. I've always just translated using the `+` sign to create a translation of a post. Under `Multilingual Content Setup` I've set which fields to `Copy` or `Copy Once` (see attached photo), and this has always worked. It just stopped working now, and I don't know why.

I've made a test using the Duplicate option, and while it seems to copy/duplicate all content and custom fields, do I have to click on `Translate Independently` in the translation afterwards to avoid it getting updated every time I update the initial/main post?

Kevin

Hello,

in WordPress, all content like pages, posts, and products are post types.

Yes, you need to use Translate Independently to avoid content being overwritten.
