Background of the issue:
We are trying to add translations to a post by clicking on the flags in the post overview. We have set 'Editor for new translations' as well as 'Editor for translations previously created using Classic Translation Editor' to use ATE.

Symptoms:
For some posts, only the regular editor opens even though we set the editor to use ATE.

Questions:
Why is ATE not opening for some posts even though we have set it as the editor for new translations and translations previously created using Classic Translation Editor?

Thank you for reaching out.

I reviewed your debug information and noticed that you’re still using older versions of the WPML plugins. Please update all WPML plugins and check if that resolves the issue. Additionally, try making minor edits to the posts to trigger a resynchronization, which might also resolve the problem.

I have the same version running on a test server without this issue of the inaccessible ATE. I'd like not to update and the changelog doesn't indicate it is related. (Btw tried to update now and it failed with "Update failed: undefined"). Getting a bit disappointed. I suspect WPML can't connect with your service somehow, any other ideas what I can do to bring back this crucial functionality?

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry to hear about the issues. Please consult your hosting provider as explained here https://wpml.org/faq/wpml-plugin-cannot-connect-to-wpml-org/ as they should be able to assist you further with this.

Thanks, both the test server and the production server are with the same hoster. I managed to update now, after deregistering and registering WPML. But ATE is still not loading, should I try to "Synchronize local job ids with their ATE counterparts" from the troubleshooting page or is this risky?

Thanks for your reply.

This might be related to something else. Please share temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to your Website.

Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.

Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.

✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.

I've checked your Website and I'm able to translate your pages and posts without issues. Could you please record a short screen recording using this free tool hidden link so that I can check?

Dear Kor,
just to double check before I record: were you able translate pages and templates with the ATE (not via Elementor editor)? This is our issue here.
Best,
Philipp

Thank you very much for the recording. I reproduced these steps and the ATE only opens when a translation that is "work in progress" (cog icon) is clicked. When a new translations is triggered (plus icon) or an existing and confirmed translations is clicked (pen icon) the wordpress editor is triggered, but we need the ATE for those situations as well. Kindly try to invoke ATE for confirmed translations (pen icon) or "translations in progress" (cog icon). In both of your examples in the video, you tried the cog symbol only I think. Appreciate your support.

Thanks for reaching us.

If you're using the "WordPress Editor", it will not open the ATE for translation. That's what we called the "manual translation" as explained here https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/ . I hope this clears it up.

Dear Kor,
The different editing modes are clear. We do not want different designs but use the ATE. How can we achieve this?
Best regards,
Philipp

Thank you for your response.

I may not fully understand your request. Could you please specify which page you're having trouble translating?

If you're using the "WPML Translation Editor," all your translated pages will need to be managed within this editor as well. It’s not possible to mix the WordPress Editor and WPML Translation Editor on the same page.

Dear Kor,

The inability to open ATE applies to all pages and posts except the ones in your video with the cog icon (translation pending). To make it more clear, I created a brand new post and a new page in the master language EN ("WPML test post" and "WPML demo editor test page"). When I click any flag to translate, the regular WP editor opens in the new language despite the WPML setting to always use ATE.
We would like to use ATE. It worked before, it works on the test site, all plugins are updated.
Our problem is that we can't use ATE.
We would like to use it for new posts and also for existing pages.
Can you see the problem? If not, kindly create a new page in EN and try to translate using ATE by clicking the plus icon under any language. In our test, it opens WP-editor and not ATE.

Best,
Philipp
