We are using WPML with automatic translation and are encountering unexpectedly high charges.
For example, translating just two products is costing around 45€, which seems unusually high. Even when we choose to keep existing translations, the cost appears the same as if everything is being retranslated.
Could you please clarify:
Why the cost is so high?
How WPML determines what content needs to be translated again?
Is it possible to translate only the parts of content that have actually changed, instead of reprocessing the entire page?
We would like to ensure we are only being charged for actual changes.
2. On your site, WPML will count different words from the last save compared to the previous version. And show the "estimated" credits on the Translation Dashboard. It doesn't take into account the "translation memory" in the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) when you send the content for automatic translation.
So, the credits in the Translation Dashboard are "estimated". You will be charged for the "estimated" credits or lower if you have the same content that was charged before. The more you use ATE to translate content, the fewer credits you will be charged.
3. When selecting the option "Leaving existing translations as they are", the translation memory will be used. It doesn't relate to the word count and estimated credits in the Translation Dashboard. If you select "Overwrite existing translations", the translation memory will be ignored and all content will be translated as new content.
Lastly, my suggestion:
- You should complete all in-progress translations first.
- Use automatic translation for content that has "not translated" or "needs update" status.
- Consider editing the post, page and click Update (without any changes) to get the latest updated content.
The cost is the same whether I choose “Leave existing translations as they are” or “Overwrite existing translations.” It doesn’t seem like translation memory is being applied correctly.
In ATE, the source language is always treated as Slovenian, even though it is not intended to be the default language. This makes correct translation difficult.
Could you please check if something is misconfigured on my site or if there is an issue with how WPML is detecting the default/original language?

1. As I mentioned in point 2 previously:
On your site, WPML will count different words from the last save compared to the previous version. And show the "estimated" credits on the Translation Dashboard. It doesn't take into account the "translation memory" in the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE).
The translation memory will be applied in ATE only, not on your WordPress site so the credits in the Translation Dashboard are "estimated".
You can simply make a test:
- create a post and send it to automatic translation.
- create another post with the same content and send it to automatic translation again.
- check the credits usage in WPML > Translation Dashboard > Payments & Maintenance tab > Automatic translation usage reports.
2. Regarding the original language of the post in the Slovenian language, even your site default language is English (for example). It is normal when having an original post in a second language. You can confirm this by editing the post, switching to other languages and checking if it has the text "This is a translation of " in the Language box, then it is a translation post. Please check the attached screenshot.
