We want to build a French version of the website.

In the Advanced Editor (left column, right column) is it possible that in the "Source language" (left column) instead of the German version an English version is in there? Because our translation agency can only translate from English to French, but not from German to French.

Is it because of the default page language? If I change this to EN, do I run the risk that the default language when calling the website is then /en/, after the default language should be German?

Thanks for any assistance!

Hi there, Hubi.

The Advanced Translation Editor will use the default language that was used when the page was created.

So you would need to first create the page straight from the backend of the language that you want (switch to the language that you want to be the source language from the top area of the WordPress backend, then create the initial page in that language). After that, you can try to translate.

I hope that you will find this information helpful. 🙂

Hi Mihai,

thanks for your fast reply! 🙂
As soon as I switch to FR and create a new page that not exists so far in this language, I see "German" in the left and "Empty fields" for FR in the right column for translation. So I dont think this works.

Hi Hubi and thank you for the update.

1. Can you please share the URL of that page, the page name, and a screenshot of the area that you are referring to?

2. I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

Our Debugging Procedures

I will be checking various settings in the backend to see if the issue can be resolved. Although I won't be making changes that affect the live site, it is still good practice to back up the site before providing us access. In the event that we do need to debug the site further, I will duplicate the site and work in a separate, local development environment to avoid affecting the live site.

Privacy and Security Policy

We have strict policies regarding privacy and access to your information. Please see:
https://wpml.org/purchase/support-policy/privacy-and-security-when-providing-debug-information-for-support/

**IMPORTANT**

- Please make a backup of the site files and database before providing us access.

- If you do not see the wp-admin/FTP fields this means your post & website login details will be made PUBLIC. DO NOT post your website details unless you see the required wp-admin/FTP fields. If you do not, please ask me to enable the private box.

The private box looks like this: hidden link

I will be waiting for your response.

Hi and thank you for the credentials, Hubertus.

I can confirm that I was already able to log in successfully.

I am spending more time on this and I will get back to you as soon as I have more feedback.

I will leave the ticket assigned to myself for the moment.

Kind regards,
Mihai

Hi there, I'm back.

The URL that you shared with me is redirecting me here:
hidden link

However, I checked in our internal system and I was able to find that the page this translation job is created from is this:
hidden link

Also, it seems that the source language of this page is DE and the target language is French (attaching screenshot).

So, as long as this page was initially created in DE (German), there's no way it can show EN on the left column.

Just to also give an example, I went to the EN backend (hidden link) and I created a new page called "WPML Test".

This is the URL:
hidden link

If I now click on "+" to add a FR translation (attaching screenshot), you will see now that the correct language for the "Original language" table is "English" because this page was initially created from EN backend (attaching another screenshot but you can also see it here in the job URL: hidden link).

I hope that this better explains why you are seeing German as the "Original language".

Please let me know how things go and if there's anything you think I'm missing here.

Mihai
