This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is experiencing slow performance in the backend of their webshop, particularly after installing WPML Multilingual CMS. They also face occasional 503 errors when updating plugins, including WPML.
Solution:
If you're experiencing similar issues, we recommend following these steps:
1. Increase the PHP memory limit to match the WP memory limit, as discrepancies can cause performance issues. For example, if your PHP memory limit is 256M, ensure your WP memory limit is also set to 256M.
2. Use a code profiler to identify if WPML or any other processes are resource-intensive.
3. Debug the performance issues using the guide provided by WPML here: https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-debug-performance-problems/
4. If necessary, clone the site to a staging environment to perform further debugging without affecting the live site. Instructions on how to provide a copy of the site can be found here: https://wpml.org/faq/provide-supporters-copy-site/

Please note that this solution might be outdated or not applicable to your specific case. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If these steps do not resolve your issue, please open a new support ticket with us for further assistance.

Background of the issue:
I am trying to improve the performance of my webshop, especially the backend. I have used the recommended settings from WPML, and my hosting provider has also looked into it. I used a code profiler and found that WPML Multilingual CMS is resource-intensive.

Symptoms:
The webshop is slow, especially the backend. I occasionally get 503 errors when updating a plugin like WPML.

Questions:
How can I optimize WPML to reduce resource usage?
What steps can I take to prevent 503 errors when updating plugins?

I don´t realy know what to do. I´ve installed the debug bar and took a run on the queries. On the backend there are 587 queries with a total querie time of about 200 ms. There are several queries with ´multilingual-cms´in it. Most of them around 0,3 ms.

But it is since we installed WMPL, that the webshop is slow. Especially the backend. Are there some basic settings I can use?

Thanks for your reply.

I will need to closely examine your website. Therefore, I will require temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to a test site where the problem has been replicated, if possible. This will enable me to provide better assistance and determine if any configurations need to be modified.

Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.

Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.

✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.

Hi Kor,

The webshop belongs to one of my clients, and therefore I unfortunately cannot share the login details. We are using the Flatsome theme, and I read on your website that it is fully compatible. We are using only one translation (from Dutch to German). The backend is particularly slow. Are there perhaps some basic settings that we can change?

Thanks for your reply. Sorry, I cannot suggest any methods without first checking what's happening. Maybe you can clone the site to another staging site or provide a copy of the site as explained here? https://wpml.org/faq/provide-supporters-copy-site/

Please let me know how would you like to proceed.

Hi Kor,

Via your link I discovered that the PHP memory limit was 256M, but the WP memory limit wat 40M. I changed it to 256M and the backend seems smoother now. So I will close the ticket, but not before thanking you for your time!
Kind Regards.
