Background of the issue:
I am working on a site under development and encountered an issue during an SEO Audit using SEMRush. The audit flagged a 'Non-canonical URL' in the sitemap. The page in question shows a message in the sidebar indicating it is a duplicate of the 'KeyTalk Certificate Key Management System (CKMS)' and is maintained by WPML. WPML will no longer synchronize this page with the original content. When I try to add the canonical URL using Yoast, WordPress indicates that I am updating a duplicate post.

Symptoms:
SEMRush reports a 'Non-canonical URL' in the sitemap, and WordPress indicates a duplicate post when adding a canonical URL via Yoast.

Questions:
How do I resolve the 'Non-canonical URL' issue reported by SEMRush?
What steps should I take to properly set a canonical URL without creating a duplicate post warning in WordPress?

Hi,

Welcome to the WPML support forum. Thanks for contacting us.

While waiting for one of my colleagues to help with this ticket, and based on what you've described, allow me to clarify a few points.

When a page is duplicated, it will remains synchronized with the original language and the canonical will point to the original language. That's a standard SEO behavior to avoid "duplicate content" issues with search engine such as Google.

If you prefer, you can click on the "Translate independently buton, to convert this duplicated page into a translation. In that case the translation will have its own canonical. Everything is explain in the documentation I shared above.
