Background of the issue:
We are preparing for a large-scale translation project of over 100k words from English to Hebrew. Our plan involves purchasing approximately 200k WPML credits, machine-translating most of the site, and then hiring an editor to review and correct the machine translation. During a recent test of the machine translation and editing process, we encountered issues with the new WPML editor.

Symptoms:
1. Some strings could not be saved during the editing process as the 'save' button did not react. 2. Even after reaching 100% completion and clicking 'Complete Translation,' the dashboard still showed the translation as incomplete. 3. Upon reentering the editor, certain strings reverted to their original machine translation, losing the edits, and the completion percentage dropped to approximately 80–90%. 4. The new editor does not highlight the start and end of formatting, unlike the legacy editor, requiring manual formatting.

Questions:
Are the issues with the new editor a known problem, and is there a solution or workaround?
Would you recommend using the legacy editor for a project of this scale? What are its disadvantages?
Is it possible to schedule a video call with a WPML professional so we can present those issues and find the best solution for our project (we can pay for such consultation)?

Hello,

It would be advisable if I take a closer look into the issue, to identify what is causing the problem.

Would you be able to provide admin access to the site? I would enable a private reply form in this case.

IMPORTANT:
It seems that the minimum requirements are not met on the server:
https://wpml.org/en/home/minimum-requirements/

Could you please increase the WordPress memory limit (WP Memory Limit) to at least 256 MB? WPML requires at least 128M.

Your current values are:

PHP Memory Limit 256M

WP Memory Limit 40M

You need to connect to your website's server and open the wp-config.php file in a text editor. The file is located in the WordPress root directory.

Add this code to the wp-config.php file to increase WordPress memory:

define ('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');

Add this just before this comment:

// That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging.

The current values can be viewed under WPML > Support > WordPress.

These settings can be restricted directly by your hosting provider. Therefore, I recommend contacting them and asking them to change them directly if the changes are not applied immediately.

About the new UI of the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE):

We did in fact have various issues yet with the new UI of the Advanced Translation which often were solved after entering the settings to ATE and disabling "I prefer bigger segments".

After this, you will need to edit the original content, save the content again, and then open the translation editor.

---

We do not offer any video calls on this support forum, but I will do my best to assist you on this matter.

Best regards
Andreas

Hello,
Thank you for your response.

Yes, we can enable admin access (I don't see a private reply option yet so I can't share the credentials).

We have increased the WP memory limit after being advised to do so (to 128M) during the support ticket submission. We have now increased it further to 256M as you suggested.

Thanks

Hi,

I would like to offer to take a closer look and request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to the site to investigate the issue further.

The required fields are below the comment section when you log in to leave the next reply. The information you provide is private, meaning only you and I can see and access it.

IMPORTANT
Please be sure to back up the site and database before granting us access.

If you can't see the "wp-admin / FTP" fields, your post and site login details will be set to "PUBLIC". DO NOT publish the data unless you see the required wp-admin / FTP fields.

The private reply form looks like this:

The only job who was currently in progress on your site was for the post "Israeli Citizenship for Partners of Israelis: Eligibility and Application".

I had not issue with completing the translation for this post.

Could you please name me an example, where I can see the issue?

Dear Andreas,

Apologies for the late reply; I’ve been doing some additional testing.

We originally identified three issues:

1. Translation entries not saving after editing (turning orange instead of fully blue).
2. Formatting not appearing in the translation field.
3. Clicking "complete translation" not completing the translation.

I tried auto-translating, editing, and completing a couple of new translations, and here’s what I found:

1. Issue number 1 has improved but still occurred once or twice, where an entry turned orange instead of fully blue after editing and clicking ctrl+enter. I had to manually return to the field and click save again to turn it blue.

2. Issue number 2 seems to be resolved. I now see formatted text highlighted in the translation field.

3. Regarding issue 3, for the first test article, "Read the petition…," clicking "complete translation" worked correctly, and it appeared as "completed" in the translation manager jobs tab. However, for the second test article, "A drafted reservist’s…," after finishing editing and reaching 100%, I clicked "complete translation," but it still shows as "in progress" in the jobs tab.

I didn’t go back into the editor to click "complete translation" again, as it should have worked the first time, and I want you to be able to investigate why it didn’t.

In general, it seems the issues have improved somewhat (perhaps due to the memory increase), but it still isn't working completely perfectly. As mentioned, we are facing a large project with a significant financial investment for the editor, and I’m concerned about potential technical issues slowing down work and increasing costs.

What do you suggest?

On my test which I escalated already internally the issues 1) and 3) were connected.

This means, that once you open ATE again the segment is saved as a draft and this is why the translation was never completed.

Can you confirm this?

Hi,

Weird update from my part. I accessed the ATE for the "a drafted reservist's..." article:

1. It opened the editor in the legacy mode, even though last night I was working on it on the new version.
2. 2 out of 16 segments appear orange ("in progress").
3. These 2 segments appear with my edits, they do not seem to revert back to the automatic translation output. So they were indeed saved in some way or another...

Screenshot attached.

What should we do next?
We would want to use the new version of the ATE if possible and not the legacy one (the interface is more comfortable).

We are sorry about the inconvenience!

This issue has already been escalated to the development team which is currently testing a fix for this issue.

As the Advanced Translation Editor does run on an external server, you will not need to update any plugin to receive this fix. Once the fix is implemented on our ATE-Server the translations will again work as expected.

Until now, I have not yet had a release date for this fix, but it will be available as soon as possible (within 2 weeks).

In the meantime, please try to use the old UI of the Advanced Translation Editor, if necessary.
