Hi Team, our guess is that WPML adds prefixes (-1, -2, etc.) when uploading files to the Media Library, even though the files were deleted earlier. We have checked WordPress for conflicts with other enabled plugins, but the upload mechanism returns to normal only when WPML is disabled. It appears to be an old issue, as we tested a copy of our website that was used several years ago, and the same behavior occurred there.

Please advise. Thank you!

Hello,

I am not aware of such an issue, so I suspect it could be something specific to your website. While you wait for my colleague to take over, please try next:

Please make a backup before proceeding.

1) Please update all WPML plugins to the latest version by going to the Plugins → Add New page, click the Commercial tab, and then click Check for updates.

2) Can you check and confirm if the issue still happens when using WP Default theme and only WPML plugins enabled?

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,
Drazen

Thanks Drazen! We did that earlier, but the issue still happened with WP default theme and only WPML plugins enabled. It's worth mentioning that the website is on a multisite network, is there a chance it might be affecting the plugin's behavior?

Hello there,

I am here to assist you further with this matter.

When a media file is uploaded on the website using WPML, our usual practice is to translate it into all languages. This action generates a database entry, not a duplicate file. Based on your statement that you have deleted the images, there is a probability that they are not being removed properly from the secondary languages.

To confirm this situation, I propose a test. Kindly follow these steps to see if the outcome is consistent:

- Upload a new image.
- Navigate to WPML->Settings->Posts and pages synchronization and activate the option: "When deleting a post, delete translations as well" (Please be aware that this setting affects all posts globally, not just media.)
- Delete the image and then proceed to re-upload it.

Is the same issue still present?

Could you also clarify if you are uploading the image through the standard process or utilizing any import methods?

Look forward to your reply.
