Hi
I hope you are doing well.

On all my websites, I use a lot of affiliate links (links to sales page on other website where I get a commission in case of sale).
Some of them are able to redirect to the correct visitor language but not all of them.

Therefore, for those which can't, I have to enter the URL of the translated page in WPML.
When reviewing the automated translation I type "https" and change and validate them.
It works. On that post.

However, I often have the exact same affiliate link. And it never remembers that translation.
Plus, after updating a post, about half of the time, the new translation of the post looses the translations of those URLs. So annoying.
I tried entering a URL in the glossary (since it is a single string of character) but it does not work either.

Therefore I am losing a lot of time for no added value.

Is there any system to have the automated translation tool remember the translation of a URLs (like it remembers the translation of exact match phrases)?

Thanks!
Regards,
Claire

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting WPML support, I'd be happy to help you with this issue.

Yes, the translation memory can remember the translation of links on a post/page and it works correctly on my demo site. And please notice that, the translation memory works if you translate the link from language A to language B, but it does not work if you translate the link from language A to language C or language B to language A.
Please read more on the documentation https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/how-wpml-keeps-track-of-your-translations/

You can also define links in the glossary in WPML > Translation Management > Automatic Translation tab > Glossary. Please read more on the documentation https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/how-to-create-and-manage-glossary-entries/

If it does not help, I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. It would be better to a testing site where the issue is replicated. Your next reply is set to private to share the info.

❌ IMPORTANT: Please backup your database and website before proceeding ❌
You can use this plugin to create the backup:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/

While checking the debug info, I see that the WordPress Memory Limit is below the requirements. The minimum requirements are 128M, but we do recommend 256M and the debug information of your site shows it set to 40M. Please check this link for more details
https://wpml.org/home/minimum-requirements/.
You can increase it by adding the following code in your wp-config.php file, right before the /* That’s all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */ line:

define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M' );

After adding the code you can confirm that the memory was changed correctly from WPML > Support > WordPress > Memory limit.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback.

After checking this issue and asking my colleague about the automatic translation for URLs, I see that, the URL can be translated automatically when it is a part of the content. That means you can see it to translate without searching, you can check the post "WPML test" on your site, "This paragraph includes a link hidden link"

Currently, the URL (link) is hidden in Advanced Translation Editor but if you translate it at once, it will be available and become a part of the content for the current post.

I hope that makes sense.

Oh. I am so sad.
You gave me hope the process would work... and now starting my day a bit defeated...

Have you ever seen articles where links are written out? Have you ever clicked on one?
I can't do anything with that option....

Could you please add it to the inputs to the development team?
It seems so logical for it to work on links with anchor text, I can't be the only one needing this feature.

Thanks

Claire

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback.

I got some news from our development team:

Translation memory for hidden segments (eg links) is per page. We do not support translating a link everywhere via translation memory (TM), so we are doing this per page.

- Create a page with the Guttenberg button with some links added to it
- Translate the page and translate the links using ATE search
- Update the original page, add another button with the same links
- Open the translation editor
- Links will be translated from TM because TM is per page in this case
- Create another page with the same links - links will not be translated - as it was implemented
- And Glossary is not supported for hidden segments

So if you use the same link in other posts, you need to translate it manually. Sorry for not being able to help in this case.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

So this is a very long reply to say no 🙂
Such a shame, I am surprised that it is not in the pipe. Affiliate marketing is now used by so many, including large news sites.

Could you please add "translation memory or glossary fro hidden segments" to the list of potential improvements for the development team to consider?

But even on the same page. It does not always remember. If the translation of an aupdate to the page does not create a bug, then, yes it remembers.
If there is a small bug in the translation, it oftens looses part of the link translation. And bugs happens often! (when you add link to a sentence that has not changes, for formatting clashes...)

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback.

Of course, I can add it as a feature request but I can't give any guarantee if and when it will be implemented.

Regarding the small bug, I think you can make a small change to the post title/content to trigger the translation in this case. If it does not work, please let me know where it happens on your site. I will take a closer look.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks
