[Resolved] Unable to translate slugs AGAIN despite having the correct setting on
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client is unable to translate multiple slugs on their website despite having the correct settings enabled. They are experiencing an issue where only one slug is available for translation instead of five, as seen on the original English page. Solution: We confirmed that the slug translation is functioning correctly for the page the client mentioned. If the client wishes to change the translated slug, they can simply click on it to modify it. Additionally, if the client uses absolute URLs, WPML should automatically recognize and translate these URLs. However, for relative URLs, WPML might not detect them as internal URLs. In such cases, the client needs to manually search for these URLs or they will appear in the Advanced Translation Editor for translation. For more details on how to search for a URL, please visit: https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-translate-urls-shortcodes-and-html-attributes-using-the-advanced-translation-editor/
If this solution does not resolve your issue, or if it seems outdated or irrelevant to your specific case, we recommend opening a new support ticket. We also highly suggest checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Background of the issue:
I am trying to translate my slugs. Link to a page where the issue can be seen: hidden link
Symptoms:
Unable to translate slugs despite having the correct setting on. Only one single slug is available for translation instead of five slugs appearing on the original English page.
Questions:
Why am I unable to translate slugs despite having the correct setting on?
How can I get the ability to translate slugs within the advanced editor?
– Go to the top right corner of the translation editor
– Click the gear icon
– Enable the option “Use the previous version of the Advanced Translation Editor.”
– Refresh the page and search for the attribute again.
After that please do as follows:
- Go to your Dashboard > Pages.
- Open the edit screen of the original page. You should see a pencil/circle/gear icon in the sidebar options under the "Languages" section.
- Make a small change, for example, add an extra blank space at the end of a sentence/paragraph.
- Save it.
- You should now see that a circular arrow appears beside the 2nd languages links, this means that an update is required.
- Edit the translation again and save it up to 100% translated.
First off, I never get that circular arrow icon you mention. The gear icon remains a gear icon even after a make a small change in the original version of the page and save it.
Secondly, the missing slugs remain missing no matter what.
Thank you. I'd appreciate it if you could give me the URL/User/Pass of your WordPress dashboard after you make sure that you have a backup of your website.
It is absolutely important that you give us a guarantee that you have a backup so if something happens you will have a point of restore.
Make sure you set the next reply as private.
I will try to test and see if I can identify the issue.
Okay, I was finally able to make the backup. Somehow, my access was blocked out of suspicion activities they are saying. Did you get any failed login attempts just earlier?
Oh, I thought I needed to translate the button links on the page. Are you saying, whatever internal links I use on a page, the translation of the target pages will use their own embedded slug translation? Therefore, I don't need to worry about the button links?
Yes that is correct in scenarios that you use the absolute URL. So for example if you use:
hidden link
The link should be understood by WPML automatically and you do not need to do anything.
But if you used a relative URL such as:
/lanaudiere-business-alarm-systems/
Then, WPML can not detect that it is an internal URL and you either need to search for it or it will show in Advanced Translation Editor for translation.
