This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem:

This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
We recently updated our WordPress core and all plugins. After the update, we noticed significantly slower loading times when saving posts in wp-admin.
After some testing (disabling various plugins and temporarily switching to a standard theme) we identified WPML as the main source for the slow performance. With WPML enabled, the various ajax calls that are necessary for saving a post take around 30 seconds. Without WPML, it takes only around half that time.
Is there something we can do to reduce these loading times? Working like this is a bit frustrating for our editors.

Hello,
I would like to offer to have a closer look at the problem and request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to the website to investigate this issue further.
You can find the required fields below the comment section when you log in to leave the next reply. The information you provide is private, which means only you and I can see and access it.
IMPORTANT
Please be sure to make a backup copy of the website and database before allowing us access.
If you can't see the wp-admin / FTP fields, your post and website credentials are set as PUBLIC. DO NOT publish the data unless you see the required wp-admin / FTP fields.
I may have to install a plugin called "All In One WP Migration" to make a copy of the website where I can investigate the issue further.
However, I would also be very grateful if you could provide a staging site or copy of the website from your server yourself for this purpose.
If you have any questions about creating such a staging site, you can consult your hosting provider. Just take note that WPML should be registered on this site again.
If you are unable to provide such a copy of the site for testing, please let me know on this ticket.
The private response form looks like this: hidden link
Next time you reply, click "I still need assistance."

thank you for checking. I just tested it again, saving the "Impressum" page takes around 8s for post.php, the other ajax calls are between 2 and 3 seconds (with WPML active).
My screenshots above were from this blog post: wp-admin/post.php?post=1488343&action=edit&lang=de
I see, thank you for the screenshot. Your browser seems to split the request into two lines. In Safari, the two lines with post.php show up as one line, resulting the 8s time.
But anyways, our editors don't care about the timing of an individual ajax call. They care about the total time it takes to save a post, and this total time doubles with WPML activated.
I installed the Debug Bar Plugin, however I don't see an option to debug an ajax call with it. Maybe you can have a look?
when trying to see the values isolated without 3rd party plugins, WooCommerce Product Feed caused a Fatal Error. Can you please check the FTP credentials so that I can re-enter the Backend? I get an "Access Denied"
First, I tested it isolated (no other plugins activated):
1) WPML + actual theme:
1.42 - only 1 call viewable
all other calls <1.30s
2) WPML + Default Theme
1-23s - only 1 Call viewable
all other calls <1.15s
The 2nd call (on Chrome) is only viewable once I reactivate W3 Total Cache, which increases the loading time already to nearly 4 seconds (1.73s + 1.98s) for the 2 calls. Other calls <1.38s.
I tested this plugin first, as it showed errors in the Backend once it was deactivated. Therefore, it seems the root cause here is not WPML. Try first to replicate it using the latest version of this plugin.
