Background of the issue:
Our client’s website (hidden link) uses Divi Builder and WPML for multilingual content management. We are experiencing an issue with the Traditional Chinese page where the Contact us button’s icon does not display properly. This button is located within the Footer template (or a global module). We have updated WPML and Divi Builder to the latest versions, checked the Footer module translation, and attempted to fix the language mapping. We have also provided our WordPress admin login and FTP access credentials.

Symptoms:
The Contact us button’s icon (envelope icon) is missing on the Traditional Chinese page, while it displays correctly on the English and other language versions. After adjusting the Footer module translation and language mapping settings, some previously translated Chinese content became missing or incomplete.

Questions:
What is the root cause of the missing Contact us button icon on the Chinese page?
What is the safest way to resolve this issue without overwriting or deleting the existing manually translated Chinese content?

I have followed the instructions you previously provided to adjust the settings.

However, all of my previous Chinese translations are now gone (see screenshot 1).

In the past, we manually translated our Chinese content. After adjusting the article in the following link:
hidden link

I found that in the WPML Chinese content section, everything is now empty and seems to require retranslation.

Previously, in the setting area indicated by the red arrow in screenshot 2, our setting was “Don’t map this language.” But after following WPML's instructions and selecting “map” for Chinese, when I went to adjust the article again, all my previously manually translated Chinese content disappeared.

Now I have changed the setting back to “Don’t map this language” in that section, but when I return to the Chinese WPML section of the article, the Chinese content is still missing.

Could you please assist in resolving this issue? Thank you!

Hello,

To ensure the quickest and most accurate support, please provide your debug information so I can look at some of your configurations. We have an excellent article on how to locate it here: https://wpml.org/faq/provide-debug-information-faster-support/.

I visited your site and, as far as I can see, the button is working properly in Chinese. Check the screenshot attached, please.

Regarding the translated content, although the editor is empty, the front end seems to be working fine. Is it possible that you used the Classic Editor or the WP editor to translate that page?

Best Regards,
Otto

I created a “Contact us” button in the Divi Library, as shown in Image 1.
The Chinese translation has already been done in the editor, so theoretically, when I switch the language to Chinese, I should be able to see the “Contact us” button.
However, it just doesn’t appear… as shown in Image 2.
For all other languages, the pencil icon appears, and after switching the language, the “Contact us” button can be seen.
Additionally, the English “Contact us” button has an envelope icon in the background, as shown in Image 3.
But for other language versions, the envelope icon doesn’t appear behind the button.
Both Divi and WPML are up to date.
When switching to German, the button does appear.

Hello,

I do see the "Contact us" button in Chinese (including the envelope). Please check the screenshot attached. I can't spot any difference between the English and the Chinese button. Am I missing something?

Can you please try clearing the browser's cache, in incognito mode or with a different browser?

Best Regards,
Otto

Hello
My article was translated through WPML, but the Chinese part was manually adjusted and translated in the WPML background instead of automatically translated
I previously followed your advice and turned on the map setting
The "Chinese" part I manually translated disappeared (as shown in the attached picture)
How can I adjust the settings so that the part I manually translated will not disappear

Hello,

I am sorry, I though we were discussing the "Contact us" button problem. Is that one sorted out?

Regarding the missing translations issues:
Manual Chinese edits vanished because, once the translation is re-opened in the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE), ATE had no record of the manual changes.

This can be prevented by switching the post back to translate, locking the page to the WordPress editor.

What I mean is: each page can be translated using ATE or manually editing the page, you can choose what you prefer per page. But the flows can't be mixed as ATE is not aware of the changes done in the translation using the WP editor.

Here's a detailed explanation:

Because my Chinese translation was manually translated in ATE, not automatically translated using translation points in ATE
So in my case, I did not switch from WordPress translation to WPML ATE translation
In my case, I followed WPML's suggestion to change the setting in this picture
Originally it was Don't Map, and then I changed it to Map according to WPML's suggestion, and then the Chinese translation in WPML disappeared...
My Chinese translation has always been translated by myself in WPML ATE, and I have not used WPML points for translation

Hello,

Thanks for the clarification.

The editor content is empty, but the translation still works in the front-end, right?
hidden link

Is this the only page with the problem? And only for Chinese, right?

Can you please try the following for this page:
❌ Please make a full website backup before proceeding ❌

- Open the translation of hidden link using ATE
- Click on "Translate automatically". If the page was already translated, this should not cost you anything because of the Translation Memory.
- If it uses credits, I'll be happy to refund them to your account.

Best Regards,
Otto

Hello,

I conducted a test and found that after using WPML's automatic translation, the Chinese content displayed is different from the manual translation I previously provided. Please refer to the attached screenshot.

WPML used Google Translate for the Chinese version, but since the automatic translation is inaccurate, we manually translated the content ourselves.

We do not want to use the automatically translated Chinese version.

In addition, this automatic translation has consumed some of our translation credits. Could you please assist in requesting a refund for the credits used for this translation?

It seems that WPML did not apply the existing translations from our translation memory.

After exiting the translation editor, I chose “Skip” because I did not want to save the automatic translation.

Could you please confirm whether this means the automatic translation has not overwritten my original manual translation?

Thank you!

Hello,

I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue.
It would be better to a testing site where the issue is replicated.

The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.
Maybe I'll need to replicate your site locally. For this, I'll need to temporarily install a plugin called “Duplicator” or "All in One WP Migration" on your site.
This will allow me to create a copy of your site and your content.
Once the problem is resolved I will delete the local site.

**IMPORTANT**
- Please make a backup of site files and database before providing us access.
- If you do not see the wp-admin/FTP fields this means your post & website login details will be made PUBLIC. DO NOT post your website details unless you see the required wp-admin/FTP fields.

Best Regards,
Otto

Dear WPML Support Team,

We’ve encountered a critical issue regarding one of our translated blog posts. Specifically, the Chinese version of this article:

🔗 hidden link

On the frontend, the Chinese URL and slug exist, which indicates that the translation has been previously completed. However, when accessing the WPML translation editor in the backend, only 16% of the content appears as translated — the rest of the previously translated Chinese content is completely missing.

This poses a major inconvenience for us, as we had relied on the translated content for ongoing multilingual SEO efforts. Normally, we:

Manually translate Chinese content via WPML backend.

Automatically translate the other 6 languages via WPML’s automatic translation feature.

Only update Chinese content when changes are made to the original post.

But due to this sudden issue, the original Chinese content now appears lost, and we may need to retranslate everything from scratch — which was not the case before.

We kindly ask:

Is it possible to restore or retrieve the previously translated Chinese content in the WPML backend?

Is this a known issue or bug?

Are there any logs, revisions, or translation memory we can use to recover the content?

Please advise us on the best course of action. We appreciate your prompt support on this matter, as it directly impacts our content and SEO operations.

Since WPML provided a solution on May 29, I followed the SOP instructions, but then discovered that the Chinese translation content disappeared.

Our engineer has created a test site using the backup from May 28, along with SFTP access as follows:

Hello,

Thanks for the explanation and for providing access.

Take into account that this is a public forum, so only share credentials when the private form is enabled. I removed them from the previous post.

Anyway, I managed to take a look at both your staging and production environments.

Is it possible to restore or retrieve the previously translated Chinese content in the WPML backend?

❌ Please make a full website backup before proceeding ❌

In the production site:
- Go to Posts
- Switch to Chinese using the languages switcher in the admin bar
- Search for: 強大的葉綠素分子
- Edit the translated post
- On the right panel you can "Browse revisions" (check the screenshot attached)
- It looks like on the last edit the translations were removed (June 3)
- You can restore the previous version from there
- After doing this, go to WPML -> Translation Management -> Translation Jobs and cancel the translation in progress for this post
- Then, if you need to edit it, send it again to translated

Alternatively, I noted that if you edit the translation (using ATE) of this post in the staging environment, the translation is available there. Note the different ID's of the job ID in the URL, compared with the one that opens in the production site.
If the previous steps fail, you can copy and paste the translation from it.

Best Regards,
Otto
