Page association/link and page differences

mattP-19	Tell us what you are trying to do? Hi there. I'm trying to figure out the proper steps when working with WPML. We have a site with 500 pages (+/-). Roughly 300 in English, 200 in Spanish (which are linked correctly). When I edit a page in English, and there is already a page in Spanish BUT that page is currently blank, how do I copy the content and then translate it. For example: I have a page called "Areas of Practice", which has several paragraphs and images. I have a page called "Areas de Práctica", which is completely blank. They are already linked as "translations" of each other. Under "Translation Management", it says the page is already translated into Spanish, which it's not, there's no content. Can I... A) Break that association, and then ask the English page to be translated again or B) Copy the content in some translated way without breaking the association? It depends on translation editor you are using to translate the page. 1. If you are using WordPress editor: edit the translation page > Click on "Copy content from English" then edit the translation manually in Spanish. Please check this screenshot hidden link 2. If you are using WPML editor: make a small change to the page content/title > Update. Then go to WPML > Translation Management > Select the page > Add to translation > Translate the page. Refer documentation https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/ https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/ While checking the debug info, I see that the WordPress Memory Limit is below the requirements. The minimum requirements are 128M, but we do recommend 256M and the debug information of your site shows it set to 40M. Please check this link for more details https://wpml.org/home/minimum-requirements/. You can increase it by adding the following code in your wp-config.php file, right before the /* That’s all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */ line:  define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' ); define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M' ); After adding the code you can confirm that the memory was changed correctly from WPML > Support > WordPress > Memory limit. mattP-19	Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately the first option is greyed out... hidden link When I tried the "Overwrite with English" option, now I have a warning in the corner that WPML isn't managing it... hidden link ...and two pages named the same thing... hidden link After switching back to the WPML translator, I was able to translate that page into Spanish, so I guess that "replacing" the content, then translating worked. Oddly, I hadn't seen those buttons before. The tooltip indicated they were only available when starting with a blank page. As I'm using Divi for my theme, creating a blank page in that editor creates an initial first column/section, so the page isn't technically "blank" when you start. That might have been part of the issue. I'd almost consider that a bug to send to the dev team, I'm sure some of the other page builders would be similar. Last question - The above will work for pages that are blank, but what about pages that exist but have different content? For example, I have these... hidden link I have Office pages in English, and in Spanish. The English pages were updated with new content. The Spanish pages were not. I read both the documentation pages you included, and neither called out the specific scenerio I'm looking at. The manual translation seemed the closest. Do I "Connect with Translation" first, then duplicate, then edit the Spanish version? Or, if I select "Duplicate", will it duplicate the page and create 2 Spanish versions? Maybe I'm doing this in the wrong order. Do I translate, then associate? Or the other way around?

Do you create them in Spanish language independently and not translate the page from English? If yes, please follow the documentation below to connect already translated pages https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-link-already-translated-pages/ then you can continue editing the translated pages with WordPress editor and don't need to Duplicate them. The correct workflow is: - create a page in the default language. - translate it to a second language with WPML by going to WPML > Translation Management > Select the page > Send to translation, or clicking on the translation icon in the Language box when editing the page.
