I'm not sure if this is possible:

I've made a site in English. Translations are in Dutch and French.
Is it possible to change the default language to Dutch.
English and French would be regarded as translations then.

Hi there.

Yes, you can change the default language from WPML > Languages.

Nothing should break if you change it.

Please take a look at my colleague's response here:
https://wpml.org/forums/topic/default-language-impact/#post-13005277

I also recommend that you first create a full website backup before doing changes like that.

Kind regards,

Hi there and welcome back.

Thank you for the update.

1. Can you please go to Plugins > Add new > Commercial > and make sure that you have our latest plugin versions? If there are new versions available, please first create a full website backup and then update everything to the latest version. See if it works now.

2. If point 1 doesn't help, the issue might be caused by server-specific settings or a compatibility issue between WPML and (at least) one of the active plugins or the active theme.

Can you please let me know if this issue happens even when only the WPML plugins are active and you are using a default WordPress theme?

Please try the following steps so that we would test for a compatibility-related issue:

- create a full website backup

- disable all plugins except WPML and its add-ons

- check if the issue is happening again

- if it's not, reactivate your plugins one by one, checking every time if the issue shows up again so that you can understand which plugin is causing that issue

If the issue happens even with the non-WPML plugins disabled:
- leave all the non-WPML plugins deactivated

- switch to a default theme like TwentySeventeen

- try to recreate the issue now

If you have the chance, it would be best to do this in a staging (testing) environment.

Please let me know how that goes and if following any of these steps solved your issue or brought any change.

I will be waiting for your response.

I've managed to change the default site language to Dutch, but it doesn't change how the translations are handled.
Base language is still English and translation is still Dutch.

In Pages and Posts, the default language is Dutch, BUT English translations cannot be done with the Advanced Translator.
In Products, the default language remains English.
So there's a mix of default language Dutch in the general WP environment and default language English in the WC environment.

Wouldn't it be better to, starting from English as the default language, delete all Dutch translations? And then set the default language to Dutch. Change all the English texts into Dutch. And then add a new language, namely English?

Hi there.

Your approach might definitely be more straight forward but it would require more time.

Something on the server might block WPML from doing that switch so yes, if you can follow that procedure that you mentioned, that would kinda' guarantee that you accomplish your goal.

Usually, it is best to have the final default language set from the very beginning of the WPML setup but, sometimes, things can happen and you need to make changes along the way.

Have a lovely day!
