Hi there.

Before your ticket is assigned to one of my colleagues, I will try to help.

Can you please enable the WordPress debug log and recreate the issue to see if you are getting a longer error message that is more specific?

This will allow us to see if any PHP errors are being produced.

More Info: https://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress

In order to do that, edit the wp-config.php file inside your WordPress directory and insert the following lines:

define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );

Now please reproduce the issue once again.

Locate the debug log in: /wp-content/debug.log

Paste the content (if any) on a site like pastebin.com and then share the link here with us (only you and us will see the URL you are sharing).

We will be waiting for your response.

Kind regards,
Mihai Apetrei

Dear Mihai

Thank you for your message - I’m a photographer not a coder.
It took all yesterday for me to get access to my dashboard again and once I did and reactivated WPML I got another fatal error. I have restored my dashboard and left WMPL deactivated. There maybe some conflict with a plugin I have installed, I haven’t got time to go through the long process of checking each plugin but I think it’s probably one to stop people right clicking and saving my images, which as a photographer I need.

If I get time today I will try again but if that doesn’t work I will just uninstall WPML and ask for a refund.

Hi there and thank you for the update.

I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble that you are going through.

If you are able to add the lines I mentioned here (https://wpml.org/forums/topic/activating-wpml-i-got-a-fatal-error-and-cant-access-my-dashboard-now/#post-14257627) inside your wp-config.php file, it should give you a more detailed error message and this way, we can find out more about what is the exact error and from where it is coming.

Once that's figured out, the issue can be tracked down and properly debugged.

Mihai

I've looked at this a few times Mihai and I'm not technically competent enough to do it.

I'm afraid I'll have to leave it and find another translator plugin but thank you for trying to help.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML Support. I'll be following up on this ticket. Thanks for trying the above suggested steps, I’ll try my best to help you out in this case.

To take a closer look at this issue, please provide temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP Login info) to your site (preferably staging site), so that I can look into your setup and debug the issue.

Your next answer will be private which means only you and I have access to it.

=== Please backup your database and website ===

✙ I would additionally need your permission to deactivate and reactivate Plugins and the Theme and to change configurations on the site. This is also a reason the backup is really important.

Thank you

Ok, before we continue, can you please install the beta versions of WPML, because it seems part of the problem you're having will be fixed with the beta version.

you can follow these instructions: https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-install-beta-and-development-versions-of-wpml/

can you see if part of the problem disappears?

Hello Alejandro
I'm in the UK.

I understand you are trying to resolve the issue while not having access to my site but as I said to your colleague earlier I am not technically confident enough to add anything to wpconfig. I will not do that.

This was the message I got from wordpress yesterday after the fatal error.

Hii!

WordPress has a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.

In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, sitepress-multilingual-cms.

First, visit your website (hidden link) and check for any visible issues. Next, visit the page where the error was caught (hidden link) and check for any visible issues.

Please contact your host for assistance with investigating this issue further.

If your site appears broken and you can't access your dashboard normally, WordPress now has a special "recovery mode". This lets you safely login to your dashboard and investigate further.

To keep your site safe, this link will expire in 1 day. Don't worry about that, though: a new link will be emailed to you if the error occurs again after it expires.

When seeking help with this issue, you may be asked for some of the following information:
WordPress version 6.3.1
Active theme: Chameleon (version 100.2.4)
Current plugin: (version )
PHP version 7.4.33

Alright that error is enough. it basically tells us that the plugin wasn't installed correctly.

1) Please uninstall our plugins (nothing bad will happen) and then install them manually by downloading them from these 2 links:

- https://wpml.org/download/wpml-multilingual-cms/?section=changelog (install the beta version and make sure you install this plugin first)

- https://wpml.org/download/wpml-string-translation/?section=changelog (install the beta 2, please)

2) Once that's done please go to plugins > Add new > Commercial and click the "check for updates" button. you should not get an error here, but let me know if you do.

----------

I also found a plugin that can actually enable the debug log without you having to do it manually 🙂 --> https://wordpress.org/plugins/debug-log-manager/ (i was meaning to send it on my last reply, sorry!)
