[Resolved] Missing pictures, links to other elements not localised, URLs not updated
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client is experiencing issues after importing translated XLIFF files using WPML. Pictures are missing from many elements, and some buttons linking to other elements are not translated, despite the linked elements being translated. Additionally, URLs are not automatically updated for translated languages as expected. Solution: For the missing pictures issue: 1. Navigate to WPML->Settings->Media Translation. 2. Ensure the following options are checked: - Translate existing media in all languages - Duplicate existing media for translated content - Duplicate the featured images for translated content 3. Click on the start button and wait for the process to complete. For more information, refer to the WPML Media Translation documentation.
Tell us what you are trying to do?
We translated a website for a client using WPML and XLIFF files. After the import of the translated files, pictures are missing in a lot of elements. In some elements buttons that link to other elements are not translated although the linked element is translated. Furthermore, WPML suggests that URLs are updated automatically for translated languages (https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-page-slugs/) but they aren't.
In one element (Antique Kollektion), some linked elements are missing. See screenshot "source-version" for the original page (category: product) and "target-version" for the translated page. In the translated version the titles of the linked elements are not translated.
If we have to update the translated elements ourselves are there methods to automate or bulk update?
In some elements, the client couldn't change the contacts. They are embedded as a WordPress lazyblock <!-- wp:lazyblock -->. Our client had to delete them and create them new in order to change them a simple edit was not possible. Can you help us with these or is this WordPress's domain?
They contain translatable text which isn't part of the translatable text of the XLIFF files. Can you assist us on how to translate them?
Welcome to WPML support. I'd be happy to help you with this.
After the import of the translated files, the pictures are missing a lot of elements.
Can you follow the below steps and see if it helps?
- Go to WPML->Settings->Media Translation
- Check the following options
-- Translate existing media in all languages
-- Duplicate existing media for translated content
-- Duplicate the featured images for translated content
- Click on the start button and wait for it to finish.

Thanks for getting back to me. These options were all activated. But I found out that the problem was caused by missing tags in the XLIFF files and could correct it.
However, we still have the issue of the missing translations of linked elements on the translated pages. They appear in the source language. In WPML -> Settings -> Custom Fields (I use the German version, so it might be different), I can see that they are not set to Do not translate. Might that be the issue? Can we easily translate them without doing the rest all over again?
Furthermore, our client has the issue that the translated English pages redirect to the original German version when you klick on a link in an English page. He started to change the links in WordPress which takes a lot of time. Is there an easier way, maybe changing a setting somewhere and links are adapted automatically?
We don't have links custom fields, only the ones in the screenshot "custom-fields". Are you referring to any of these?
The linked elements in the English page should be in English, not in German (see screenshot "untranslated fields"; the text in the red boxes). If you click on them, you get redirected to the German pages, not the English ones. Is there an easy way, to a) translate the text of the clickable elements ("Eiche...") and b) update the links so they redirect to the English page?
I suspect the text and links are part of the custom fields, but I am not sure. As for the links, there is a function to update links in articles in the WPML settings way down on the page. But I am not sure if this applies here.
To debug this issue further, I would need to check your site settings once, for this I would need temporary access (wp-admin and ftp) to your site.
So could you please provide me with those details, you will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. hidden link
Our client can't give you access unfortunately. I opened the element I gave you the screenshot before and made another one of the code in the editor with the elements highlighted which supposedly contain the untranslated text and link to the original page. It is a lazyblock. Can you tell if we can automatically update these fields somehow?
Thanks! We will try this for the next translation. But right now, it's easier to change the texts and links manually in WordPress. The client did this already for the majority of affected pages. We didn't know we had to make certain elements translatable. The client is new to WordPress and WPML and we didn't translate a site with lazyblocks before. If there is no way to update the texts and links automatically, you can close the ticket.
You can create a config file and resend the content to update the content, there is no workflow to update the content automatically apart from this as of now.
Our client hasn't installed the necessary Multilingual Tools Plugin. So, we will keep this in mind for the next translation and set WPML correctly to extract all content we need for translation.
Thanks for your help with this!
