I am unfamiliar with WPML and working on a development site. The website's domain will be changed when the site is ready to be live but I am not sure how to set up the dual domains (that is what they want) in development.

I had to change the permalink to domain/fr to get the translation function to work but I worry if i change the permalink structure after it will cause big problems!

Hello,

Welcome to the WPML support forum.
Let me rephrase to make sure I understood correctly.

- Right now you are working on a DEV site with the URL format "Language in a repertory" (i.e domain.com/fr).
- But once you migrate to PROD, you want to switch the format to "different domains per languages" (i.e domain.com, domain.fr, domain.es) right?

You can do the change, that won't be an issue. Few observations:
1. Setting up different domains require a little bit of preparation (DNS)
Here is the full documentation: https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/language-url-options/how-to-use-wpml-with-different-domains-per-language/
Don't skip the test in section "Testing if the domains are set properly". Just to be sure that everything is set up correctly.

2. After doing the change, don't forget to resave your permalinks in "Settings > Permalinks" and clear any cache you might have (plugin, server side etc...)

If you worry about the migration itself from DEV to PROD, let me share some tutorials:

- Each site should have it's own key, you can register de DEV key and a PROD key.
Ref: https://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/#register-development-sites

- After the migration you will get a banner "new address detected", choose "this is a copy"

Ahh, okay I am studying all of this. Thank you! I am currently using the /fr appendix on my temporary domain for the french side of the site. My challenge here is that the domain for both EN + FR are currently in use.

My next question is will it be problematic if I use the /fr domain structure during development, then change it to the separate domain structure option at the end right before I link the new domains via DNS? I'll definitely ask WP Engine for help with linking to the existing domains. I can't see an option from their dashboard to link two of them..

Thanks again,
Elaine

Hi Elaine,

You can make the switch at anytime.
- Make sure that DNS are properly set before
- Do the change
- Re-save your permalinks

As you mention that both domains are already in use. Please note that WPML will take care of the secondary domain. So you shouldn't have any site, WordPress install, or even folder on our server for that secondary domain when doing the switch.
