Instead, I got: a loading screen that will not disappear, and if we try to refresh, we get this error (screenshot). Once we get that error it breaks the site and we are reverting to a past working version each time.
I am not sure I understood your issue fully. You explain that you are trying to create a header and footer, but the screenshot shows the menus page.
Please answer the following so I understand better and can help you resolve the issue:
- Does the site break when you attempt to assign a menu to the header or footer?
- Is the outcome you want that the Header have the same menu in both languages, only translated? In that case, you do not need to assign the Spanish menu separately, you simply need to assign the English menu and translate it to Spanish, following our documentation here: https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-menus/#translate-custom-links
If I misunderstood what you are trying to achieve, please try to explain it to me in a little more detail. Explain what you want the final outcome to be, that way I can see if you are doing it correctly.
We are trying to translate menus to Spanish. We followed the documentation and created the menu by clicking + icon. But when try to add items to the menu site crashes. Please see the error logs for reference.
In that case, please try to use the automatic menus sync tab. For that, you do not need to manually create a menu in Spanish. You only need to create them in the default (English) language, and then use WPML -> WP Sync Menus.
WP Sync Menus will do all of the creating behind the scenes, you only need to make sure that all the pages in the menu are translated, and may need to translate some additional strings.
