This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are trying to manage your media library and want to remove duplicated images, but encounter an error message saying 'unable to retrieve file path' when attempting to delete a duplicated image.
Solution:
We recommend ensuring that your WordPress is updated to the latest version as a first step. It's important to understand that WPML does not duplicate images in the same language or the media files themselves—only the meta information is duplicated. For more detailed information on how WPML handles media, please visit: WPML Media Translation documentation.
Additionally, always make sure to back up your database before making changes to it.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems irrelevant due to being outdated or not applicable to your case, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the problem persists, please do not hesitate to open a new support ticket with us for further assistance.

Thank you for contacting WPML support.

I would like to clarify that when you upload media to the Media Library, WPML makes it available in all languages. However, it does not duplicate images in the same language, nor does it duplicate the media files themselves—only the meta information is duplicated.

For more information, please visit: https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/media-translation/.

First, please ensure that you update your WordPress to the latest version and check if the issue persists afterward.

Also, remember to back up your database before proceeding.

Hello Andrey,

Pls kindly see my answer below.

The duplicated media are not only the new images but also existing (old) images which were uploaded BEFORE installing WPML.
Before WPML installation, there were no duplication in media (total # of my media were 280 or so. but now it doubled)

Also i backed up the data and did updated WordPress to the latest version.
unfortunately the issue was not resolved yet.

Appreciate your continued help on this matter.

Regards,
Aiko
