This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

**Problem:**
The client encounters an issue when attempting to update WPML or other plugins, receiving an error message: *"Update failed: Could not remove old translations."*

**Solution:**
If you are facing the same issue, we recommend creating a full backup of your site. Then, try updating the WPML plugin manually by following the instructions available here: https://wpml.org/faq/updating-wpml-manually/. If the problem persists, consider replacing the site key in the WP > Plugins > Add New > Commercial tab.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it is possible that the solution may be outdated or unsuitable for your case. We encourage you to check the https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verify the fixed version, and confirm that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins.

Thanks for your patience.

I will need to closely examine your website. Therefore, I will require temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to a test site where the problem has been replicated, if possible. This will enable me to provide better assistance and determine if any configurations need to be modified.

Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.

Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.

✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.

Thanks for your reply.

I broke the site when I tried to deactivate the WPML plugins. Could you delete the WPML plugin and then, reupload the latest version? I'm referring to this method https://wpml.org/faq/updating-wpml-manually/

Hello Kor,

I've set up an old dev subdomain using the same database and files. I managed to remove WPML per your instructions and it didn't break the site like it did with the main domain (why?). I can't install it back through OTGS. This subdomain is registered but when I try installing it, it says: Unable to register: Site key not matching. I tried on beta and production update channel.

The testing site: hidden link

Thanks for your reply.

Are you saying that you cannot manually update the WPML plugin on the production site?

As for the site key issue, you need to replace the sitekey in WP > Plugins > Add New > Commercial Tab as shown in the attached screenshot.

Hello Kor,

I'm sorry for the late reply. I managed to successfully install WPML on the testing site and then direct main domain to it. The production site was breaking too much and it broke another plugin as well. I don't know why it did that, it's all the same files and database but for some reason it only crashed heavily on the main domain. The testing site, while not having WPML functionality, worked fine and didn't break despite deletion.

It appears to be working for now and hopefully I'll be able to update the rest of the site without issues.
