I want to add a default hreflang tag to an existing directory/subfolder which was already setup before installing WPML.
Is there any documentation that you are following?
Could not find any relevant documentation.
Is there a similar example that we can see? hidden link , this is one of our sites which is also using WPML and an hreflang tag is automatically added here.

I am not exactly sure what do you mean, but if you have WPML installed on that website and that is your default language page, you can enable the directory for the default language:
I will try to elaborate on my issue better, our site has multiple directories which are in English (default site language) however only 1 directory is in a regional language and requires an hreflang tag.
There is no translation happening here, the content is being posted in a different directory all together in a regional language which is completely different from all other directories & content.
This directory is not setup using WPML, however I want to try and see if the plugin can help me create an hreflang tag for the said directory.
thanks for getting back, I am afraid the only way it can work is if you are using WPML plugin and translating pages, in any other way I do not think you need Hreflang.
Other then that, I think you would have better experience advising with and SEO expert and using SEO plugin on that website, if no translation appear you do not really need WPML.
