Background of the issue:
I’m experiencing an issue with our multilingual website, which is available in Slovenian, Croatian, and English. Currently, when someone searches for our site on Google from within Slovenia, the English version appears as the primary result. We would like the Slovenian version to be prioritized and displayed for users in Slovenia.

Symptoms:
The English version of the site appears as the primary result on Google for users in Slovenia, instead of the Slovenian version.

Questions:
How can I configure WPML so that the Slovenian version of the site is the primary option in Slovenia?

Hi,

Would you please kindly follow the steps below to provide the debug information?

https://wpml.org/faq/provide-debug-information-faster-support/

The priority of which page to show is decided by Google and not WPML.

If you use an SEO plugin such as Yoast then you need to make sure that you install the WPML SEO plugin to make WPML compatible with Yoast.

For more information:

https://wpml.org/documentation/plugins-compatibility/using-wordpress-seo-with-wpml/

After that, WPML adds a tag in HTML code called hreflang. It shows to Google that the page in question is also available in other languages and provides the language's code.

Then, Google decides to show which page is for which keyboard.

You can learn more about HREFLANG here:

https://wpml.org/documentation/support/adding-hreflang-wordpress/

Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you for following the steps.

I checked and the hreflang tags are added correctly now (screenshot)

Now you need to wait for Google to index your website and see what will happen.

Just FYI, that is all possible with WPML and WPML can do which is adding the HREFLANG.

After that, it is up to Google to pick that.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

Do you have any ideas on how to address this issue with Google? It’s still opening the English version of the page in Slovenia, for example.

Thanks!

Hi,

No unfortunately as the only thing WPML can do is the HREFLANG option.

Maybe if you can ask the Yoast support they can help as they are the experts of SEO functionality.

Thanks.
