I need to build a clone of redfoxlotto.com, but since the site is operated by a whitelabel provider, I do not have access to all WordPress functions. I cannot run a full site backup.
I can back up all pages, posts and media though.
If I set up a fresh WordPress installation, and then import all my content and media, how can I make sure that the "connections" between english original and translations are preserved?
The website has a total of almost 8000 pages and posts in 32 languages, and I do not want to have to manually rebuild the menus for each of the languages.
Hello there,
Unfortunately, it is not possible to clone your website with limited access. To take a full backup of your website or any particular content, you must have access to install a backup plugin such as UpdraftPlus, All In One WP Migration, WP All Import, etc. If any of these plugins are already installed, ensure you have access to a backup, including the database. You may also try to take a backup from hosting or (S)FTP, but a database backup is essential to make a clone of your existing website.
Failing to do so may result in losing some data, media, menus, and translations. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Maybe I did not make myself clear enough. If I:
set up a blank site,
install WPML there,
then export just the content from the original site, using the built-in WP function "Tools" / "Export",
import the files generated by the export
will the connections between original English and the corresponding translations ("is translation of...") be preserved?
Hello,
Unfortunately, exporting all content while preserving the language mapping is impossible. When you import all your content from the `Tools > Export` and then import it on the new site, all imported content will be listed under the site’s default language. Therefore, it is not recommended to use this method to migrate content. For an example, please see the following link: hidden link
It would be best to speak with the third-party site maintainer to gain admin access and install a plugin. This way, you can migrate the content while keeping all menus and language mapping intact.
