Hi WPML team
I have purchased and used the WPML Multilingual plugin and been very happy with the results.
I have just purchased a theme called Geotheme.com to create a local guide. I was told the theme is compatible with WPML but now see it is a lttle more complicated than the standard WordPress installations I have been using.
From what I can see with the complexity of the theme I will need to upgrade to the WPML Multilingual CMS plugin – no problem.
I have seen several forum threads from users of Geotheme and it looks like they are eventually getting the theme to work with WPML – but there appears to have been many “learning curves” to get to the result. My question here is: Do you have a tutorial that I can use to take me step by step through the application of the Multilingual CMS with a theme like Geotheme.
This would make me more confident if I knew I had a track to run from from installation of the WPML plugin.
Thank you in anticipation for your help.
Regards
Roger Swain
PS the webpage I will be building with Geotheme is not the web page listed above.

You can write in any language with WPML. It comes with over 40 languages pre-configured. Hindi and Punjabi are included. In any case, if you ever need to add a language variant that’s not included in WPML’s GUI, you can always add it via WPML->Languages->Edit languages.
hi
I have a mulitpress wordpress site running directorypress and realtypress. I want users to have acess to my site in english and spanish. Does this plugin automatically translate the directory press and realtypress listings? and does it work on a mulitpress site
I’m assuming that you are referring to WordPress multisite mode. Yes, WPML works fine on multisite.
However, WPML doesn’t do any sort of automated translation. It’s a tool that lets you translate content, but it doesn’t translate. With WPML, you can run multilingual sites and translate yourself or using translation services.
Hi,
I currently need to set up a WordPress Business / Consultancy Website, in both English and Thai. I wondered if you would mind answering a few questions for me please…
1) One of the Themes I was thinking of using is http://pandathemes.com/wordpress-themes/topbusiness/ do you happen to know if your Multi Lingual Plugin will work well on this theme?
2) Is your Multi Lingual Plugin automatically configured for Thai Language? If so, does it automatically do the language conversion for you? Or do we need to code it & write the Thai language pages ourselves?
3) I really know very little about the Installation of Themes and Plugins. Is your Plugin easy to use and does it come with Installation Instructions for a Novice? Will I need someone with a moderate to high level of Technical experience
4) Does the Plugin provide the Small Flag Icons that can be placed on the Website for site visitors to simply click on? If so, are we able to select the place on any WordPress Theme where we position the Small Flag Icons? Is this limited to the Plugin or the Individual Themes?
5) Is the Plugin – Cross Browser Compatible with the top 4 or 5 Web Browsers? Responsive – so it shows up well on any device?
I’ll look forward to hearing back from you!
Kind regards,
Darren.
1. I’m not sure about this theme. We will be happy to review it together with the theme author. WPML works well with most themes, but without testing, I can’t tell you for sure.
2. WPML supports Thai. It doesn’t translate your content. You will need to translate the content yourself. WPML lets you write content in multiple languages, but it doesn’t do the actual translation of the texts.
3. We think that WPML is easy to install and set up. I hope that you will find it the same. You don’t need any development experience to use WPML.
4. Yes. WPML will add a language switcher to your site, which offers visitors to choose their language. You can add WPML’s language switcher to different parts of the site.
5. WPML will not cause any browser compatibility problems to your site. It outputs very little of its own HTML. The theme outputs almost everything and WPML only outputs its language switcher. If your site is responsive today, it will remain responsive after you add WPML.
We are developing a Premium Theme for WordPress that will be sold on Themeforest.com and we are interested in including your plugin in it. Would that be fine if we buy the Multilingual CMS at 79$?
You should not include WPML with themes – not on Themeforest or elsewhere.
Instead, we encourage you and we’ll help you make your theme compatible with WPML. You can include that information in your theme page and tell people that they can get WPML for multilingual sites. When you like to WPML, you are welcome to use an affiliate link, so that you receive 30% commission from each such referral.
We are keen to purchase wpml to enable our site to appear in both English and French. We understand from looking at your system, that you can request translation of text. Before we take the plunge and purchase, could you let us know roughly how much it would cost to translate the whole site, please?
WPML and translation service are separate things. Indeed, you can get translation work from ICanLocalize, via WPML, but the two are not bundled together. WPML costs $79 and allows you to run a multilingual site. It doesn’t matter how much content or languages are in your sites.
Translation from ICanLocalize costs around $0.09 USD / word, per language. WPML includes a quote wizard that lets you count words in your site and get a cost calculation for content translation.
Looking at your plugin, but need to ask whether it’s possible to have different pages/front end navigation depending on what language, the user select?
E.g. If the user select English language the user must see page1, page2 and page3. If the user select Danish language the user must see page1 and page 3 (not page 2, which is not related for Danish readers).
Sure, this is how WPML works normally. WPML filters the WordPress queries and gets them to display only content in the current language. So, your English navigation will show only English content and Dutch navigation will show only Dutch content. You can also edit the menus and create your different menus per language. Have a look here for this: http://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-menus/
I currently have a joomla site. I am thinking of switching to WordPress. I have three full joomla installs on my site in order to have spanish, and english versions. Check it out at http://www.inspireworldwide.com/us and http://www.inspireworldwide.com/espanol and http://www.inspireworldwide.com/USes. I would much rather just use one install of WordPress and be able to add duplicate pages. One in Spanish and One in English. We also have a Spanish US site that is different from our Spanish Mex site with different options.
Yes, this is exactly what WPML does. You will have one WordPress site, with the content for different languages in the same database. When you migrate to WordPress, you will need to copy the content from the different Joomla installations to the single WordPress site. I think that there are services that can help you automate this process.
You can certainly buy WPML, but you should NOT bundle it with a theme. Instead, you can make the theme fully multilingual-ready and include a link in the WordPress admin that suggests to use WPML for multilingual sites. When you do that, you are welcome to use your affiliate link. This way, your theme clients who need multilingual sites will buy WPML and you receive a 30% affiliate commission.
We are a web design agency and develop our own bespoke themes for each client. I currently have a requirement from a client to build a multilingual site with additional event sales functionality. I have seen your page which says that Events Manager is compatible with WPML. However, I am unwilling to pay for software on spec, without being able to test it first. I am able to test Events Manager in a single language site, but need to be assured that (a) WPML is suitable for our requirements and (b) is compatible. What can you do to help?
We don’t use the events manager plugin, so we can’t tell for sure. I also understand that you don’t want to risk paying for something that will not work for you. For this reason, we offer unconditional 30-days money back guarantee. If you buy WPML and you are not completely happy, for any reason, just tell us and we will refund your order.
Actually, I don’t consider that to be helpful. Sure, you have an unconditional money-back guarantee, but you will only refund the amount in US Dollars. I’m in the UK, so there are exchange rate fluctuations and transaction fees which will almost certainly result in my losing money. If you have a way of me paying you in Pounds Sterling, then you take the exchange rate and fees risk and I would be happy. Or, you could guarantee to refund me the full cost of my purchase, adjusted to cover the extra exchange fees. Personally, I don’t see why you can’t offer a “Lite” version, or serial numbers that have a 30 day expiration. I don’t believe I’m the first person to have said this to you!
Hi, I am wanting to purchase WPML so my website can be in Polish and also English. However some of my blog posts I only want to viewable in Polish and some only in English. Is this possible?
I also would like to have some of the side bars and categories slightly different for the two language site. Is this possible?
Yes, WPML will allow you to translate whatever you want and keep other content (blog posts and pages) untranslated. If you want, you can display untranslated content, or display only translated content.
You can also customize the sidebars. If you are using text widgets, you can translate their content in different languages.
Hi, before I purchase, I wanted to make sure that the Hebrew includes change to Right-to-Left. Also, the purchase form says downloads and updates for one year. Does that mean that I will have to re-purchase every year?
Ruth
WPML includes RTL styling for the WordPress admin. It doesn’t include CSS for your theme (the public pages). Many themes come with RTL CSS, but it’s best to check this with the theme author. If you’re creating your own themes, have a look at how we added RTL support to wpml.org: http://wpml.org/2011/12/adding-rtl-support-for-theme/
With your purchase you get unlimited sites and upgrades and support for a year. You can renew upgrades and support at 50% the original cost for each following year.
Amir,
As a pretty ignorant website-builder, this will be my first time working with CSS. I think I understand what I need to do. My question now is – will I have to enter the rtl every time I post in Hebrew, or will it become a part of the template in some way? BTW the theme I am working with is WPfolio.
Ruth
When you edit content, you shouldn’t have to worry about RTL display. In fact, you should always separate the design from the content editing and avoid using inline CSS with content.
WPML takes care of making the WordPress admin display correctly in Hebrew. You can set it to automatically switch the admin to Hebrew when you edit content in Hebrew. This will make the RTL / LTR administration easy and natural.
The theme should include the RTL CSS. I’m not familiar with that theme, so I don’t know if it includes that or not. It would be best to ask the theme author. If they created RTL support, they will know for sure. If they don’t know, it means that it’s not included in the theme and they need to add it.
Dear Amir, I am only now proceeding with the website, and purchased a theme that does not include RTL support as I understood that it is fairly simple to add (if that turns out not to be true I will return it). I just wanted to understand how to begin: Should I first order and install WPML? And then do I need to create a child theme for the RTL stylesheet? Will the system recognize when to use RTL and when to use LTR (since the website will also have English)?
Thanks, Ruth
WPML and RTL support for your theme are not really related. You can test the RTL functionality of your theme with WPML or without it. If you are planning to have a multilingual site, you might as well get WPML and start using it. This will make your testing easier and also switching between languages easier.
A child theme would be good, so that every time you update the theme, your changes don’t get overrun. In any case, you only need to add one file to the theme (rtl.css) for complete RTL functionality. Our guide explains what that CSS file should do.
Yes, you can add languages with WPML at any time. Even if your site is fully built and designed, you can add WPML now and include more languages. You have full control over the languages that you add and the way you let visitors choose their language.
Yes, it should work. Information about compatibility with themes you can find here: http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/
Your theme does not appear to be on the list but as long is similar as far as functionality goes with most of the themes or the WordPress standard themes it should work just fine.
I did some research and it seems that WPML can’t provide SEO friendly urls if WordPress is installed in its own directory.
I don´t like to install WP files in the root, but I want each language with its own directory in the url. Did you guys came up with a solution to this?
There shouldn’t be such limitation when using the dedicated folder for WordPress.
As for putting the default language in a ‘language directory’ too, this is a feature in the upcoming WPML 2.9 (already available for a preview in a beta release)
According to this article, you have to install WP in the root or use the default permlink structure (not good for SEO) to activate language directories.
It looks that the article you are referencing is outdated. WPML will work just fine with WordPress installed in a folder as long as the permalink settings are set to something else than the default urls.
Thanks for bringing this up. We will update that page to avoid this confusion in the future.
1) When you visit a post in a certain language, is it possible to only see the comments that have been posted for that certain language? (eg: I visit a post in the French translation and I only want to see comments that have been posted by other people on the French translation and not any of the other translations)?
2) Is it possible to send the user on a first-visit to an automatically detected language (eg: the language of his browser)?
3) What would be the best way to have a different domain name for each language?
1. Yes, normally you will only see comments in the language you are looking at. When you switch language, you will see the comments in that other language.
2. Yes, WPML includes browser language detection. This does exactly as you describe. It will send visitors to content in their language on the first visit. Later, if the visitor switches language, WPML will let him switch without pulling back to the auto-detected language.
We haven’t tested WPML with this theme. To do this, we need to work together with the theme author. Would you like to check if the theme author is also interested? If so, they can go to our Go Global program: http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/go-global-program/
WPML is actually a plugi. You can install it by uploading the content into your ‘plugins’ directory. For complete instructions, have a look here: http://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/
I’m actually a current customer of WPML and like it a lot. However, I’m coming up on a project that made me curious on how WPML handles SEO and Geotagging.
Let’s say I had english.com, but also wanted a spanish version of my site. With WPML, could I have all my spanish pages at english.com/es ? Also, does WPML separate itself as two websites. If a person in South America searches for my website, will Google show them the spanish version at the top? (assuming all my SEO and pages were spanish labeled).
Last question, could my spanish pages run under an entirely different domain from WPML? (spanish.com)
Yes. If you enable languages in directories, you will get English in english.com and Spanish in english.com/es/.
Also, since WPML uses different pages for translations, each gets its own SEO attributes. You can (and should) set unique titles and meta-description tags for your pages. WPML automatically sets the language information which Google reads, so you get SEO optimization by default.
You can try on our site. Just search for “mehrsprachige WordPress”. Can you see the German version of wpml.org?
I am a new manager/webmaster for filmfestival.dk – a site the has been custom developed by professionals, a few years ago. I have overtaken the whole site as-is, and I am in charge of further development. Right now we have 2 sites, one in danish and one in english. We want to only have one site in the future, with your plugin managing the languages.
Now, the site contains a lot of custom post types and custom taxonomies – and some very neat functions to show a festival programme.
Can you please take a peek at our site – maybe you can help me determine whether your plugin will work with our current site?
If you’re sites run on WordPress and the themes are compatible (most chances are that they are if they use standard WordPress functions) and all the other requirements for WPML are met than the only thing you would need is to import the content of one site into the other.
Hi WPML team
I have purchased and used the WPML Multilingual plugin and been very happy with the results.

PS the webpage I will be building with Geotheme is not the web page listed above.
There are several geothemes out there. Can you tell me which theme you are talking about? A link to the theme page would be great 🙂
Hi Amir
The Geotheme I am using is: http://www.geotheme.com/
Thanks for the swift reply

Hi there!

Looking at your plugin, but need to ask whether it’s possible to have different pages/front end navigation depending on what language, the user select?

If you are planning to have a multilingual site, you might as well get WPML and start using it. This will make your testing easier and also switching between languages easier.
For your convenience, you can find a guide about adding RTL support to themes, here:
http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/build-rtl-wordpress-themes/
A child theme would be good, so that every time you update the theme, your changes don’t get overrun. In any case, you only need to add one file to the theme (rtl.css) for complete RTL functionality. Our guide explains what that CSS file should do.
Does this help?
Hi Guys.
Elegant Themes recommended your WPML plugin to me. Can it be implemented in existing sites?
For example I have a few functional sites that are already in production and in spanish that need an option in English for english speaking users.

Yes, you can add languages with WPML at any time. Even if your site is fully built and designed, you can add WPML now and include more languages. You have full control over the languages that you add and the way you let visitors choose their language.
I have had this wordpress site custom designed for me. I would like to translate it to Arabic. Will that work with your plugin.
Also I have mobile themes such as wp mobile pro. Does that work with your plugin?
thanks
Yes, it should work. Information about compatibility with themes you can find here: http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/
Your theme does not appear to be on the list but as long is similar as far as functionality goes with most of the themes or the WordPress standard themes it should work just fine.
Will your plug in work with this theme do you think?
http://www.elegantthemes.com/demo/?theme=eList
It is a directory theme.
Thanks!
We have a bunch of themes from Elegantthemes in this list here: http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/ Any of the themes from the list in your url will probbably work fine too.
Hello!
I did some research and it seems that WPML can’t provide SEO friendly urls if WordPress is installed in its own directory.
I don´t like to install WP files in the root, but I want each language with its own directory in the url. Did you guys came up with a solution to this?
Thanks in advance,
Facun
There shouldn’t be such limitation when using the dedicated folder for WordPress.
As for putting the default language in a ‘language directory’ too, this is a feature in the upcoming WPML 2.9 (already available for a preview in a beta release)
Thanks for the feedback, Mihai.
According to this article, you have to install WP in the root or use the default permlink structure (not good for SEO) to activate language directories.
Hi Facun,
It looks that the article you are referencing is outdated. WPML will work just fine with WordPress installed in a folder as long as the permalink settings are set to something else than the default urls.
Thanks for bringing this up. We will update that page to avoid this confusion in the future.
Hello,
I have some questions about the features:
3. Have a look at this FAQ for how to setup languages in domains:
http://wpml.org/faq/server-setting-for-languages-in-different-domains/
Hi, does your plugin work with Abanix theme ?
http://themeforest.net/item/abanix-business-portfolio-shop/4596725
Thanks
We haven’t tested WPML with this theme. To do this, we need to work together with the theme author. Would you like to check if the theme author is also interested? If so, they can go to our Go Global program:
http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/go-global-program/
Hi,
i would like to ask how do i install this theme onto my wordpress site?
WPML is actually a plugi. You can install it by uploading the content into your ‘plugins’ directory. For complete instructions, have a look here:
http://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/
Sorry another question is, would i be able to see the admin dashboard in another language?
Some of my colleagues do not understand English
Yes, you can control the admin language for yourself. In fact, you can set a different admin language for each WordPress user.
Hello,
I’m actually a current customer of WPML and like it a lot.
Hi does Multilingual CMS $79 (USD) edition includes all the capabilities that are in Multilingual Blog $29 (USD)
Meaning I can buy the expensive version and get the rest of you feature available, or am I suppose to buy both editions?
Thanks
Yes. The CMS version is the complete one. The Blog version includes only the core WPML plugin as is really intended for simpler blog sites.
HI,
Does your plugin support landing pages for languages eg.
website.com/de
or could you map domains over — eg
website.fr
thks
Andre
Yes, you will get a different homepage for each language. You can see it on our site as well. Have a look here:
http://wpml.org/
http://wpml.org/fr/
Sorry, I forgot the 2nd part of your question. You can map languages to directories or domains. For domains, there’s a FAQ page that explains the DNS and Apache setup:
http://wpml.org/faq/server-setting-for-languages-in-different-domains/
Hi,
I am a new manager/webmaster for filmfestival.dk – a site the has been custom developed by professionals, a few years ago.
Thanks in advance 🙂
Bw. Peer
Hi Peer,
If you’re sites run on WordPress and the themes are compatible (most chances are that they are if they use standard WordPress functions) and all the other requirements for WPML are met than the only thing you would need is to import the content of one site into the other.
