This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is trying to set Chinese pages to private, but the status keeps reverting to public. They have already disabled the option to copy the publish status from the English version to the Chinese version.

Solution:
We recommend disabling the "Synchronize private flag" feature. To do this, go to WPML > Settings > Posts and pages synchronization.

Here is a step-by-step guide:
1. Navigate to the WPML Settings page.
2. Locate the 'Posts and pages synchronization' section.
3. Uncheck the option for 'Synchronize private flag'.

I am trying to set my chinese pages to private. However when I change the status to private it keeps automatically going back to private. Also when in the settings I have enabled that the publish status from the english version should not be automatically copied to the chinese version.

Hope you can help. We need the pages to be on private ASAP.

Hello!

You can achieve that by disabling a feature called "Synchronize private flag" under WPML > Settings > Posts and pages synchronization.

Here's a video where i show you the entire process: hidden link
