This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
I try to do translations using the WPML translation editor. It doesn' work, probably since my webmaster has made a working session copy downloaded to his computer. There's a red bar showing "WPML has detected a change in your site's URL. To continue translating your site, go to your WordPress Dashboard and tell WPML if your site has been moved or copied." when clicking the editor. What should I do to make the translations work ?

In fact, when clicking the link you give the following choice :

SITE MOVED OR COPIED - ACTION REQUIRED
Looks like this site is a copy of a different site, or moved to a different URL.

I moved the site to this new URL
This is a copy of my original site
Save
More details

=> I neither moved the site, nor this is a copy of my originla site. It's the original site, but I also made a working session copy which is not active for visitors. I hope it's clear.
Solution:
This is expected, the banner might also appear when we make copies of the website. Please check here (https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/using-advanced-translation-editor-when-you-move-or-use-a-copy-of-your-site/) the possible scenarios when this banner will popup:

Migrated the site to a new domain
Moved a site from a development URL to a production URL
Used a duplicator plugin to create a testing environment
Used a demo site prepared by Toolset

In your case, the adequate option would be 'moved'. After this the translations should work normally.

Hey there,

Thanks for your contact!

This is expected, the banner might also appear when we make copies of the website. Please make sure to read the documentation above and let me know if you still have doubts.

Mateus.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, but it doesn't make sens. Even if you're right, the procedure doesn't make sens. If I tick "moved", WPML will be told that the site has moved, which is wrong... The URL is not moved since it's the original site that is still to be considered as being the real live site with need of daily translations. I continue to create products and need to be able to translate them even if there's a copy site for the webmaster.

Concerning the copy site, it is so far just a working session for the webmaster that we set up in order not to create conflicts or bugs with the live site. It must be a very common way of working for most sites and I must say not having an evident solution for a plugin paid premium on annual basis astonishes me.

I therefore reask, what should I do just to keep the current site as it was with WPML installed and with the working copy not to be considered (at least from WPML's side).

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Henrik Tauson

Hi Henrik,

Thanks for your reply.

You mentioned before:

It doesn' work, probably since my webmaster has made a working session copy downloaded to his computer.

So it is expected that you see the banner, even though your URL haven't changed at all. As per our doc I mentioned previously, when we make copy tests of the website, the banner is displayed.

About this:

I therefore reask, what should I do just to keep the current site as it was with WPML installed and with the working copy not to be considered (at least from WPML's side).

Please just mark as 'site moved' and this site will be considered the original. For the other copies you make, you'll need to set them as 'copied'.

We apologize for any inconvenience, but we can't change this behavior, it is how WPML works.

If you still have doubts or inquiries about this, please let me know

Thanks,
Mateus.

Hi Mateus,

Thanks for that, I have then followed your recommendation and clicked moved. The translation editor now seems to work, great. I would maybe just as a recommendation suggest to change the wordings of the 2 options you give. I got the impressions that WPML suggested me to consider the original site to be moved to a new URL and I was not at all confortable with that also asking myself questions concerning SEO issues if changing the URL.

Have a nice weekend.

BR,

Henrik
