Hi there,

On a development site, whenever I edit a page in the main language (dutch) and then open the linked page in the second language (german), I see at the top of the screen “Warning: You are trying to edit a translation that is currently being added by WPML.”.

When I ignore this warning, I can edit the (german) page.

I've read the posts on this topic but can't find a solution. The message refers to “Translation Management”, but what should I do to prevent myself (and later my customer) from getting this message every time? Will something go wrong if I ignore this?

Thanks in advance! Best Regards, Martijn

Hi,

thanks for contacting us.

Before your ticket is assigned to one of my colleagues, please allow me to walk you through some initial debugging steps. This will help speed up the support process.

The only way to prevent the message is to always follow the same translation workflow, ie only translate from Translation Management (which we recommend), or only translate the pages manually.
If you complete the translation from Translation Management first (getting the pencil icon), the message disappears.

Thank you for your response.
Sorry, I don't understand yet. I try two things with the same result:
• I change a page in the first language (Dutch) via “Pages” in the WordPress menu. Then I go to Translation Management and open the linked page in the second language (German). It still says "Warning: You are trying to edit a translation that is currently being added by WPML."
• I change a page in Translation Management in the first language (Dutch). Then I open the linked page in the second language (German) via Translation Management. Even then it says “Warning: You are trying to edit a translation that is currently being added by WPML.”

Will something go wrong if I ignore this messages?

Yes exactly. let me explain better:

What Laura mentioned was to follow this workflow: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/

this is the best way to avoid the notifications that you are seeing, but it might not be what you want IF you do NOT wish to use our translation editors (which are explained on the link from above)

------------------------

If you edit the original page (Where all the translations come from) you'll see under the "languages" section that a switch "translation editor" is enabled. turn it off and you'll be able to translate directly by clicking the "pencil" or "plus" icon, manually which is what you're doing right now but using a longer workflow.

Given that you always translate things manually, you can ignore the notification.
-------------------------

If you don't know what "manual translation" is, please read this guide: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/

Regards.

Dear Alejandro,

Thanks for your reply!

I followed the steps in https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/.

When I open the page in the first language (Dutch), I see the second language (German) in the language box with a pen in icon. When I make a change to the first language (Dutch), the icon for the second language changes to two circular arrows (please see attached screenshot). ("Duits" = "German")

When I click on that, I still get the message “Warning: You are trying to edit a translation that is currently being added by WPML.”. Is this how manual translation should work? Then it’s fine by me, but I don't understand the error message

Could I have made an error in the settings?

do the following:

- Go to WPML > Translation management > Jobs (or translation tools if you are using WPML 4.4.12 or lower) > search for the page and cancel it

- Edit the page of the screenshot and add a character to the title. save it
- Try to translate now

do you still see the warning? if you do, you can click on the checkbox to avoid having it shown everytime and continue working normally.

Regards.

Go to WPML > Translation management > Jobs (or translation tools if you are using WPML 4.4.12 or lower) > search for the page and cancel it > the page is not shown here

- Edit the page of the screenshot and add a character to the title. save it
- Try to translate now > I still get the message

do you still see the warning? if you do, you can click on the checkbox to avoid having it shown everytime and continue working normally. > Sorry, which checkbox?

Can I send you the login for this site so you can take a look yourself?

Sorry for all this, but i stil do not understand....

Sorry i wrongly told you to go to "translation tools" when i meant "translation jobs", without this part, nothing else will change.

However i can take a look, yes, you can send me the credentials in private (i have enabled the fields for your next reply).

Please let me know a reference page to ease the communication.

1) you were not meeting our requirements about memory so i did it for you and increased the WordPress memory (not to be confused with the PHP memory) to 256M.

2) I could see the translation editor was still switched on, unlike what i had suggested over here: https://wpml.org/forums/topic/warning-you-are-trying-to-edit-a-translation-that-is-currently-being-added-by/#post-9987913

I turned it off and the problem is gone, as expected: hidden link

Regards.

I think we misunderstand each other. The warning is still visible in the top of my and your screen, even in your video. Please see see the screenshot

Hm, i' suspect that's a stuck notification because i tested it and no matter what i do i keep seeing it even when it shouldn't be there, yet i tried the same on a local installation and that didn't happen.

1) Please flush your server's cache if you have one.

2) edit your database and find + delete these entries on your wp_options table (wp is the prefix so it can change if you have a different table prefix).

- icl_admin_messages
- wpml_string_table_ok_for_mo_import
- wpml_notices

then check if the notification still remains.

I deleted
- icl_admin_messages
- wpml_notices
I cannot find wpml_string_table_ok_for_mo_import

I will ask my hosting provider if it is possible to flush the server's cache.

Two questions:
1) Are sure nothing goes wrong if I ignore this message?
2) If I've done everything you suggest, and the message still appears, I'm going to do a whole new WordPress installation. I also reinstall WPML. How likely is it that the message will come back?

It's ok if you ignore this message because it seems like it's a "stuck" message, even if it wasn't a stuck one, it wouldn't create issues if you're not using any of our translation editors.

If you go to a page, right now, you'll see that under the "languages" section, the switch "use a translation editor" is turned off. when that switch is urned off, the notification shouldn't appear at all.

I tested this on 1 local site and 2 sandboxes online and the problem wasn't there on new sites.

Could it be that if you disable all the other plugins you have, except our WPML ones, the problem goes away? or when you flush the cache, of course.

I spoke to my hosting provider, they do not use any form of caching.

After that I did a whole new WordPress installation and only installed WPML Multilingual CMS. Manual translation works without any problems.

Then I installed Avada 7.5.0 with the Avada Builder and Avada Core. When translating a page manually, I immediately get the error message again.

Then I removed Avada> no problem. I think there is something wrong with compatibility between Avada and WPML

Can you please try to see if the problem still happens on the latest Avada theme version + WPML 4.5.1?

You can download WPML's latest version from here: https://wpml.org/account/downloads/

If the problem continues, then please check if you can recreate the problem here: hidden link

- Install avada here
- try to manually translate a page here
- See if the notification appears here as well.

Let me know how it goes.
