I am trying to: Automatically translate with glossary terms
Link to a page where the issue can be seen: Backend

Since the last WPML update, we have had an issue with words having a copyright symbol (cf screenshot).
It's similar to a bug we had 9 months ago (https://wpml.org/forums/topic/glossary/#post-12222365).

Thank you for updating us, I can see that our team had released a fix for this. I will test with a sandbox in case the issue was reintroduced with the latest version of WPML and will update you shortly

Please use the following sandbox I have created for us and let me know if you are able to reproduce this behavior.

I have done 2 tests and I was not able to reproduce it using this string "Carte Visa Infinite TDᴹᴰ Aéroplanᴹᴰ*"

I added two product names to the glossary. But Automatic Translation is inactive in your sandbox, so I can't reproduce my issue.

Please try now as I have connected the Automatic Translation.

When I am translating with the Automatic Translation it seems to work ok at the moment.

Let me know your results, please.

I can confirm it doesn't work, as seen on my screenshot. It was supposed to automatically translate with the correct terms:

American Express Cobalt® Card
American Express®* Aeroplan® Reserve Card

But it translated like this:
American Express Cobaltᴹᴰ Card
Prestige Aeroplanᴹᴰ* American Expressᴹᴰ Card

Hello,

My colleague Bobby is currently on vacation and I am glad to assist you on this matter.

Take note that handles segments, not single words.

On your screenshot, the content is already translated, which means the translation memory already has saved results for the whole segment.

This looks expected in this case, as this is how translation memory works:
https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/how-wpml-keeps-track-of-your-translations/

https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/how-to-create-and-manage-glossary-entries/#comparing-glossary-and-translation-memory

This means that if there is already an entry inside translation memory, then you need to overwrite it manually with your available glossary entries and then this identical segment will be overwritten in translation memory.

If you now use the identical segment on another page, then translation memory will auto-complete again and remember your last translation for this segment.

I have now created a new page "New test 1" in which I picked the Glossary suggestion manually and this works as expected.

Then I created the page "New test 2" and when opening ATE it is already suggesting the correct translation, but this is only because we already translated this earlier the same way.

Then on the page "New test 3" I am using a segment that was not yet translated automatically and I can not confirm that the translation from the glossary is applied correctly.

See sandbox for more details.

Best regards
Andreas

Hi Andreas, I can't see your tests on the sandbox (they seem in the trash, but can't access it).

But I can confirm that there is an issue on my prod website. We've been using WPML for years, so we know how it works.

As you can see on the screenshots attached, the Glossary terms are not correctly translated each time there is a Copyright Symbol. WPML recognizes these terms, though.

I found a (new?) function in WPML Glossary to identify terms as "General" or "Name." So I tried to save every Product in the glossary as "Name". But it ultimately came back as "General."

Maybe that's where the issue is coming from?

Hello,

You would only use "Name" if the original and the translation uses the same value.

Honestly, based on your screenshot I do sadly still not understand the issue or what you are expecting here.

Now, the Glossary should apply to newly created translations based on the information found in the Glossary.

It appears that the Glossary entries are correct in your screenshot but you already have a saved translation in translation memory.

The Glossary will not automatically overwrite what is already saved in translation memory.

If you expect different results for this segment you will need to overwrite the translation manually.

Could you please test this and let me know if this solves the issue?

Next, please use the identical segment on newly created content and verify if the auto-completion from translation memory works as expected.

Best regards
Andreas

I'm sorry Andreas, but on our production website, we still have the same issue. Please, have a look at these screenshots.

Carte Cobaltᴹᴰ American Express is in the glossary. WPML recognizes it.
The correct translation as in the glossary should be: American Express Cobalt® Card

But it automatically translates that to American Express Cobaltᴹᴰ Card.

So the copyright sign IS NOT correctly translated (despite being in the glossary).

It didn't happen before.

Hello,

Thank you for your message.

I see on your screenshot that you are translating from FR to EN but in your prior comment, the glossary entries are made from EN to FR.

You need to have glossary entries from FR to EN in order to work when translating from FR to EN.

Could you please test that?

Hi,

I have glossary entries. Everything worked fine until 2-3 weeks ago (I've been using WPML for five years now).

Another example is attached—a post I just updated in French. Terms are in the glossary, but the copyright symbol is not translated.

Glossary:
Carte Mastercardᴹᴰ HSBC Récompenses Argent > HSBC Cash Rewards Mastercard®

Automatic translation:
Carte Mastercardᴹᴰ HSBC Récompenses Argent > HSBC Cash Rewards Mastercardᴹᴰ

There is clearly an issue with WPML not translating ᴹᴰ into ®.

Best,

JM

Hello,

Yes, indeed there was a known issue 11 months ago which might have caused this problem.

https://wpml.org/errata/advanced-translation-editor-glossary-issues-for-entries-with-special-characters/

Could it be that this content has not been updated since then?

Can you still recreate this issue on a new draft post?

Best regards
Andreas

Hi,

No, we update posts weekly.
One another example this morning on a post (updated 2 weeks ago): I updated a number there, and once again, WPML detects that there is an EN translation in the glossary. But does not apply it correctly.

Best,

JM

And I replicate the same issue on the sandbox (Draft post "Test for Andreas).
