Tell us what you are trying to do

Software update. The site hasn't been updated in a while and it might need to be updated version by version until it's safe to install the latest version of WPML.
I'd like to know which ones in this particular case.
My client gets an error message when she tries to update her site. See attached screen capture.

What is the link to your site?

Hello there

Thank you for contacting us. I am happy to help you.

The version you are sharing with me is very old almost 2 years.

We prepared a guide on how you update from a very old version.

You can read ut here :

https://wpml.org/errata/updating-wpml-in-a-secure-way-from-a-very-old-version/

Please follow the guide and if you are not able to finish the udpate please leave a comment and I will try to help you.

Have in mind this :

1) You should also update all the plugins and espceially WP to the lateste version
2) It is good to update manually just in case

Please share if anything wrong :

Regards,
Andreas

Hi Andreas,

- Should I start by updating WP?
- Where are the archives for the WPML plugins?
- Do I have to install all of the versions in between the actual one and the latest one? This has happened to another client a few years ago, and I was given the major ones to update.

Thanks!

How easy is it to set up a staging site in order to make the updates there, see if everything is ok and then try the same on the original site?

I am suggesting this in order not to have any issues with the original site until we ensure that everything is ok.

Regards,
Andreas

I can set up a staging site, it's just more steps, but let's go with that.
- Still, can you tell me if WP shoud be updated first
- Do I have to update all of the WPML plugins incrementally, or just the WPML Multinlingual CMS, and once I'm done updating the major one, I can install the latest versions of the Nav, Sticky links and String translations?

Thank you for your reply. I suggested the staging site just to be sure that nothing will break.

But you can do this , as I have already suggested.

Update all WPML plugins manually :

https://wpml.org/faq/updating-wpml-manually/

Then you can update WordPress.

You can do the opossite, but you will have a fatal error and you should do it manually as I have already told you.

Also one small detail. Better disable WPML plugins first and then you can update manually WPML plugins, Update WP and enable WPML plugins

See if everything is ok

Regards,
Andreas
