This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client experienced a significant slowdown on their website, which coincided with the automatic generation of around 500 duplicate products. These products were English duplicates of Dutch translations and did not have a related Dutch product. The client was concerned about the cause of this duplication and its impact on site performance.

Solution:
We recommended the client to:
1. Verify if the setting to use the default language as a fallback for untranslated content is enabled by following the guide here: Displaying Untranslated Content.
2. Check if the duplication of products might have resulted from bulk operations, which can be reviewed in the documentation: How to Duplicate Pages and Posts in Bulk.
3. Consider if the WPML admin make post duplicates hook was used in their setup, as explained here: WPML Admin Make Post Duplicates.

We also noted that without clear steps to reproduce the issue or a backup of the website prior to the problem, it is challenging to pinpoint the exact cause.

If the provided solution is not relevant due to being outdated or not applicable to the client's case, we suggest opening a new support ticket. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that the latest versions of themes and plugins are installed. If further assistance is needed, please contact us through the WPML support forum.

There are automatically generated products. This generation caused an extreme slowdown of a day. No idea where it came from. Please help me out.

This Friday we had a major slowdown on our site we couldn't solve. It's been a really expensive joke. Later that day I saw that there were about 500 products generated the same day. Please note the weird arrow in the product, I have never seen this before.

The products are English, but actually duplicates of Dutch translations of other products. So in the English section of products, 500+ extra products appeared as duplicates from Dutch products. The English Dutch products didn't have a Dutch related product, like all other products do. After finding this issue I assumed this must have caused the issue. I moved them to trash. That took hours as well. The set up of these products with a weird arrow is new to me. I haven't ever seen this on our shop.

I have no clue where these products came from?! Is there a button that could have done this? How is this possible? What could have caused this generation of 500 duplicate products?! I MUST know this to avoid this to happen again.

We just moved from hosting to another company and at both companies we conclude that the biggest delays on our site is WPML. I really hope the plugin gets more efficient very soon.

Is there any documentation that you are following?
No

Is there a similar example that we can see?
Yes, but trashed. Please see image.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML support!

Can you please check this:

1. Verify if you have the setting to use the default language as a fallback for untranslated content enabled by following the guide here: [Displaying Untranslated Content](https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/displaying-untranslated-content-on-pages-in-secondary-languages/#using-the-default-language-as-a-fallback-for-untranslated-content).

2. Check if the duplication of products might have resulted from bulk operations as described in [How to Duplicate Pages and Posts in Bulk](https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/displaying-untranslated-content-on-pages-in-secondary-languages/#how-to-duplicate-pages-and-posts-in-bulk). Revisit this process to confirm if it was used, which could explain the duplication issue.

3. Consider whether the WPML admin make post duplicates hook was ever utilized in your setup as outlined here: [WPML Admin Make Post Duplicates](https://wpml.org/wpml-hook/wpml_admin_make_post_duplicates/). This hook allows for the duplication of posts and might have been a factor in the observed behavior.

Bruno Kos

1. Posts are marked as translatable (only show tanslated items)
2. No bulk operation. We have used bulk operations in the past many times, we've never seen this kind of duplicated products though.
3. Nope...

I finally had some more time to deepdive into it. Please check my findings in the attachment. just restored one of the trashed posts and checked all particularities I could find. Maybe it helps to understand it better. I could only add an image, so made a PNG of the pdf.

It's challenging to pinpoint the cause without clear steps to reproduce the issue. Do you happen to have a backup of the website prior to encountering the problem? Additionally, any insights into what might have triggered this issue would be helpful.

My question literally is what the trigger could have been, so I can avoid it to happen again. No, I don’t have an option to reproduce. Do you have any services to make sure that WPML is implemented well and runs as smooth as possible on our site? We have many slow downs and minor issues from WPML, mostly solved with workarounds, but we still note that WPML is the main cause we can’t get a fast webshop.

I am not aware of any action that could have caused that, apart from some ideas from my first reply.

As for performance you can check https://wpml.org/faq/prevent-performance-issues-with-wpml/

There are also tutorials for various plugins:
https://wpml.org/plugin-functionality/caching/

But if that doesn't help, I suggest you create a ticket so we could debug specific performance issues that happen only with WPML active.

Not really the help I've been looking for. Hoped you guys know what kind of products this are and how it could have possibly happen. It's a row of WPML issues at the moment.
