Hi,

I'd like to make my website a "cookie free" website.
Is it possible to keep using WPML without using cookies the users need to consent to?
I need to be GDPR compatible in the EU.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,
Alexandra

Hi there, Alexandra.

WPML is already GDPR-compliant.

Please take a look here:
https://wpml.org/documentation/privacy-policy-and-gdpr-compliance/#data-collected-by-the-wpml-plugin-and-add-ons-you-use

I hope that you will find this helpful. 🙂

Kind regards,

Hi Mihai,

Thanks for the quick reply.

This does not completely answer my question.
As far as I understand, WPML is using some functional cookies:
https://wpml.org/documentation/support/browser-cookies-stored-wpml/

In my case, these are:
Cookie "wp-wpml_current_language"
Cookie "wp-wpml_current_admin_language_*"

My question is:
Can I disable these cookies? Especially the first one?
If yes, how and where in WPML can I disable them and what would the consequences be?

The reason why I'd like to disable the cookies is that I'd like to make my website cookie-free, as I'd like to spare the clients from having to consent to cookies.

I hope you can help me.

Thank you!

Hi there.

Sorry, I thought that the main reason why you wanted to do that is to have the website be compliant with EU GDPR law.

The cookies that WPML uses are important for it to function properly:
https://wpml.org/documentation/support/browser-cookies-stored-wpml/

So we don't recommend removing them and if you really want to accomplish that, it would require a lot of custom work which falls out of the purpose of our Support Policy.

I wish that there was an option/alternative/workaround that I could have shared with you but it is not the case in this situation. 🙂

Hi Mihai,

Thanks for getting back to me to quickly.

I have a further question related to your latest answer.
On the link you sent to me, I can see that the cookie wp-wpml_current_language
is related to AJAX operations.
But apparently, my website and theme are not using AJAX operations and I checked the settings on my WPML plugin now and it seems that the cookie is not even activated in these settings. This has been like this by default, I haven't changed it. (see screenshot).

So... do I understand this correctly, that in my case, the cookie wp-wpml_current_language is actually not necessary for me and that I can remove it?

Thank you in advance for your further answer!

Best regards,
Alexandra

Hi Alexandra.

Yes, that's correct.

I did not know that no AJAX operations are used.

This is needed to be active only when we meet the situation in the screenshot I attached below.
