Background of the issue:
We translated the entire site automatically using the WPML translate everything feature. Now we're trying to make some manual changes to the translations on some pages on our live site. We are using Elementor as our page builder. I discovered that I can make changes to the translated version/pages by using the Elementor editor when clicking 'Modifier avec Elementor' at the top of the screen.

Symptoms:
After making changes to several sentences via 'Edit Translations' and saving them, then clicking 'Complete Translations', it says 'Save all sentences before finishing'.

Questions:
I did submit this ticket earlier today but I didn't get a confirmation via email and I don't see any open tickets in our account. Disregard this ticket if you see that one is already open. Either way, please email me at web.mlwmarketing@gmail.com (email on this account) to confirm you received this and let me know if you received my previous ticket submission. Also, since my previous ticket submission I've updated Elementor and WPML to the latest version which should show in this debug report info.

Can you tell us why it is not allowing us to make changes to a few sentences, save them, and have those changes display on the front-end of the page?
Is using the Elementor editor the proper way to make edits to translated pages after the pages were automatically translated by WPML?

Hi,

Thanks for contacting WPML forums support. I'll be glad to help you today.

First of all, sorry for the late reply; it was due to a higher workload.

Please try the following steps:

1- Edit the page's translation
2- Go to the top right corner of the translation editor
3- Click the gear icon
4- Disable the option “I prefer bigger segments”
5- Close the editor and send the page to translate again via WPML > Translation Management
6- After that, please make sure that the translation is 100% complete

Best regards,
Osama

I just want to be clear moving forward.

Before I follow those steps can you can you explain what that does so I have a better understanding of why that needs to be done? Also, do we have to follow these steps that you outlined for every page we want to make edits to the translations?

Would it mess anything up if we make edits to to the French pages directly through the Elementor editor instead of using the WPML side by side "Edit Translations" method?

Do we need to pause or turn off or pause the automatic translations settings at this point and switch to translate myself?

We just want to make sure we are doing everything correctly moving forward.

Thanks again for all your help!

Hi,

1) Thanks for your reply. These steps are to disable an option in the translation editor to check if you will be able to complete the translations.

2) You need to do these steps only once, which will be applied for all pages, but you will need to make a minor edit to the default language pages before updating them.

3) These steps will reset the changes made using Elementor. Using more than one editor to translate the same page is not recommended, so please decide if you want to use Elementor to update the pages or WPML Translation Editor.

If you want to use Elementor, please check the manual translation guide.

Best regards,
Osama

Thank you! That really helps! If we decide to use the Elementor manual translation option, when a new page is created is a French page automatically created as well that needs to be translated or do we need to manually create a new page for French just like we would for the English version?

Hi,

If you created a new page in English and want to translate it manually, please check the following steps:

1- Create a test page in English using Elementor
2- After publishing it, click Duplicate in the language side panel
3- Edit the French duplicated page
4- Click Translate Independently
5- Update it

After that, you can edit it using Elementor and translate the content manually. Please check the guide I shared in my previous reply to see screenshots for the above steps.

Best regards,
Osama

Hi Osama,

Sorry for the delay.

You sent me the following steps. I already got through step 4. In step 5, I found the page under Translation Management, checked the box to the left of it. Do I select "Translate automatically" or "Translate myself" before clicking the "Start Translating" button? I provided a screenshot.

Also, in your other response on 12/23 you said:

"2) You need to do these steps only once, which will be applied for all pages, but you will need to make a minor edit to the default language pages before updating them."

Can you explain the minor edit that needs to be made. What minor edit needs to be made? How do I make this minor edit? Where do I go to make that edit? Can you explain/describe this in detail so I understand exactly what needs to be done?

Thank you for your help!

Hi,

1) Please let me know your decision regarding translating manually or using the WPML translation editor.

2) If you want to use the WPML translation editor, you must make a minor edit. For example, you can add V2 to the page's title and update it, then remove V2 and update it again.

The above steps are for a minor update to refresh the translation if you use the Translation Editor.

Best regards,
Osama
