I wanted to ask another question but looks like I can't open another new thread, so here goes-
___________________

I have two related questions. Let us assume my domain is SweetArrow.com
___________________

Background-
___________________

I don't like installing WP on my root folder as I like the option of switching between various backup WP installations for experimentation etc. Anyway, I have installed WP on subfolder SA1, and it contains my current LIVE ENGLISH ONLY website.

The WP .htacess and index.php from SA1 were duplicated and copied to the root domain.

In the WP dashboard settings-

WP installation address shows as:
hidden link

While Site address shows as:
hidden link

All good. English website is live and working.

___________________

Part 1-
___________________

On subfolder SA3, I have another WP installation. This is where I made the WPML English/German translated version.

So the actual WP installation address is-

hidden link
and the address that shows on WPML account is also-
hidden link

Now to make this website LIVE, I will move a copy of the WP .htacess and index.php from SA3 subfolder to the root folder.

Also change WP site address in WP settings to-
hidden link

The actual WP installation address in WP settings stays same, i.e. hidden link (same as WPML account site url address).

Question 1- Shall I safely assume that this won't cause any issues with WPML as WP installation address and WPML Site url are exactly same???

______________________

Part 2-
___________________

I have CMS WPML plan, that gives me 3 licences I think.

Using a WP duplicator plugin, I have created a backup installation of the SA3 installation to a different subfolder, SA2.

On the front end everything has restored good but in the WP dashboard, WPML is asking me to choose between-

A- "I moved the site to this new URL"
or
B- "This is a copy of my original site"

Which should I choose, if I want this site to be COMPLETELY INDEPENDANT of the SA3 wpml installation? There are no pending translations etc.

I assume pick B- "This is a copy of my original site"?
I read the linked documentation but wanted to double-check.

Thanks for your help and time.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML support!

You can move your site as many times you like, but you may be prompted with https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/using-advanced-translation-editor-when-you-move-or-use-a-copy-of-your-site/

Also if WPML No longer recognizes your URL due to changes in the URL itself, you can simply remove the key from the previous URL which is no longer used, so like this https://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/#unregister, and then the registered a key again for the new URL, you can do this as many times as you wish.

Yes, "This is a copy of my original site" would be a correct option for the part 2 scenario.

On a side note, as for the number of keys, check https://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/#register

Hi,

Thanks for your patience and the reply. Two kind of related follow-up questions-
______________________

Part 1 About- Url link/slug.
______________________

Theme - Avada
Default language - English
Translated language - German.

Everything was done using the WPML URL settings option of-

"Page Url- Auto-generate from title (default)"

So everything is done, I am happy with the translated page "url/slug" of all the translated pages, but if I am not happy with slug of just one page, let us say the default English page is called-

Sweetarrow.com/dark

The WPML German translated version of that page's url is

Sweetarrow.com/de/dunkel

If I want to change the slug of the German version of that particular page to be-
Sweetarrow.com/de/dark2

How I would, I do it? I tried switching the WPML URL settings option to-
"Translate (this will include the slug in the translation and not create it automatically from the title)"

When I then go into WPML translation area of that page, where you translate the text/paragraphs, I don't see any slug edit option.

I don't dare go into the translated German page WP edit option to change the slug as it clearly says "Warning: You are trying to edit a translation using the standard WordPress editor, but your site is configured to use the WPML Translation Editor."

So what or where is the correct way of changing a translated page's slug?

Part 2-
____________________

Sometimes on a test website, I notice that SOME buttons on the German page go to the English (default) page instead of the German one. Menu links work correctly, though.

Search showed that I could go into WPML translation editor area and change there, but the buttons are not showing up there, I even tried putting "http" in the search field to reveal all links, but none of the buttons show up there. I am on the latest WPML version, so advanced editor is the default.

I even ran in WPML settings "Translate Link Targets" "Scan now and adjust links".

Thanks once again.

Hi,

So what or where is the correct way of changing a translated page's slug?

You do it through Quick Edit, a WordPress feature: hidden link
hidden link

For the issue about button, please create a new ticket so we could check, it could be a compatibility issue of some sort or a translation missing, but impossible to tell without checking this directly.

So basically use the Quick edit slug area of the translated German page. That is how I normally do for the English page, was not sure if it was advisable for the translated page too. Thanks.

Anyway, I did it, and from the menu it works fine, but internal button links are still trying to go to the old slug and the other non-related page buttons are now starting to go to the English default page.

Ok, I will start a new ticket.
