Hi Long and WPML team, thanks for your help earlier.
I still have some problems. Today I decided to try to study the system. I looked for videos on Youtube and on your channel, and your own documentation. What I wanted firstly was an overview of the system. But I could not find any. The only such video was Ferdy Korpershoek, but that was 5 years old and WPML has changed so much it was useless. So it was rather futile and your own documentations pages are not very good, they treat some areas very lightly and other small areas very deeply.
First I want to learn the basics, where actually to send pages to translation and how this works. Then, how to manually edit pages.
Specially that last section is where I don't get it, how to manually edit. I have problems with the Advanced Translator. When I open it and click on a text, it opens a page that is blank, yes only a white page.
I have not figured out what the Advanced Editor is for, in my system it is completely useless. Is it a bug?
I then tried to go to Pages and access translation from there. I check Homepage, and now there are cog wheels and it says "waiting for automatic translation", why? I have not edited that page and not asked for translation.
If I want to edit a product in Woocommerce, how do I go about it? I can not switch language from inside the product editor page! I must go to the product in the shop, from there chose language and then Edit. This opens the product page in that language. If I want to edit the same product in several languages, this is really cumbersome.
I don't get where Page translations are held - like there is a word on my front page which was wrongly autotranslated, it is actually the brand name, Valfrids, which should not be translated, but was translated wrongly to German. I asked my IT-guy to fix it, and he did, so it now shows the correct word - Valfrids. But where did he do it? When I open this page in Advanced Editor I still see the wrong translation. I can not figure out where it is done. Why does it display the correct word?
This means I have no overview of the system, I do not actually understand where to edit text, specially not on Pages or Posts.
This is almost too much to ask support for. Because frankly I am very lost.
If you can perhaps shed light on some of these questions or point me to a usable instruction somewhere, I would be happy. I need to understand the basics.
- Or simply click on the Plus icon when editing the page to translate it directly. Check this screenshot hidden link
2. how to manually edit pages
In the admin area, there is a language switcher at the topbar menu. You can hover over it and switch to the second language, then go to Pages, Posts and edit the translation page manually. Check this screenshot hidden link
3. I have not figured out what the Advanced Editor is for, in my system it is completely useless
In short, Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) is a tool that is hosted on our server and helps you focus on translating content only while keeping the same template on the translation page.
There are some benefits when using ATE:
- Using automatic translation https://wpml.org/documentation/automatic-translation/
4. If I want to edit a product in Woocommerce, how do I go about it?
Please check point 2.
5. I don't get where Page translations are held.
If you use the automatic translation, that means you are using the Advanced Translation Editor, please check point 3. The translation content is stored on our server after translating and push back to your site.
6. I asked my IT-guy to fix it, and he did, so it now shows the correct word - Valfrids. But where did he do it?
Maybe the IT-guy has edited the translation page manually and corrected the translation on your site, please check point 2. Then you open the ATE and don't see the correct translation there.
That is expected, if you translate something in ATE, it will be stored on our server and show the last saved translation when you open ATE again (translation memory feature). However, if you translate something on your site, it is saved to your site only and won't be saved on our server so you don't see that in ATE.
Last thing, I would suggest you open a new ticket for each question/issue. In that way, we can focus on the issue and solve it quickly.
Hi Long,
I am impressed with your willingness to help me.
I don't fully understand how to create a new ticket from my multi question message, or if it would be understandable to you then (because you probably handle a lot of questions). Maybe it would be if I refer to the original question.
But what I do instead is to chose one point from above and expand on it here. I hope that is ok? Only one question actually.
This is about point 2. How to manually edit pages.
I do not use Blocks at all. It is an awful editing system. We use Flatsome and build in UX Builder.
For products I understand, thanks to your explanation, that the top Flag selector changes the language on the product editing page in Woocommerce. But what about Pages, how to chose language there if you do not use Blocks?
This connects us to point 6, that I wanted to figure out where is the text string "Premiär för Valfrids online" on the top banner in the Swedish version stored? It is not accessible in Blocks. We can not switch languages from UX Builder (I think). It is a mystery..
